Are the great pavement parking rows finally coming to an end?

Arguments over whether to ban parking on pavements nationwide have raged for more than 40 years. Could new proposals finally end them?

Although local restrictions exist, there is currently no national ban on pavement parking across England and Wales. One was included in the Road Traffic Act 1974, but it was never enacted and was eventually repealed in 1991.

If passed, the bill will allow councils to ban pavement parking over wide areas andmake it a civil offence to park a car on the pavement of an urban road. It will, however, allow exemptions to be set by the transport secretary and local authorities.

Arguments over a national ban on pavement parking have been waged for decades. Could a new bill finally end them?

I do hope that the councils finally end parking on footpaths. Dangerous at teh best of times. Though it is under is already an offence under, is it, section 240 or 204? Though it's very sparsely enforced

Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.

It has always been against the law. In order to park on it you have to drive on it unless you get a hiab to drop your car there and driving on the pavement is certainly illegal.

I only know of one prosecution for it. A mate of mine was a taxi driver and he had a really old wobbly women in his cab and drove to her front door for her, a policeman saw it and he got points for it.

they should make allowances, but not fur the bone idle basads picking brats up from school that park on the footpaths on both sides of the road which in turn causes havoc with traffic that just wants to drive through, theres a big eff off asdas few hundred yards away could park there but as i said proper bone idle basads, this instance is one where they should get fined as its causing an obstruction.

It should always be enforced. Driving on the pavement is s serious offence and very likely to cause accidents, same goes for bicycles on the pavement, they should get 10 years for it. It isn't safe walking anywhere now.
I watched a girl the other day with a pram on a narrow road and she had to come off the pavement into the middle on a bend because a car stopped her pram fitting between the wall and the car, it is bloody ridiculous that she should have to do that.

We will need wider roads when cars are parked off the pavements there is no room for wider trucks, bin man, buses, infarct I can not see immediate solution this is out of question as the cost of demolition of houses when we are already having housing shortage.

What they should do is have 10x the road tax payment if you cannot park your car off the road. Seems sensible to me as you are using the road 10 times as much at least if your car is never off the road.

Most councils now will not give planing permission if it does not include off road parking.

Perhaps people should think of that before they get a house with no onroad or off road parking then. If no-one bought the houses due to no parking then builders might get the message. Cars found parking on pavements, or in front of dropped kerbs, should as a minimum be treat the same as suspicious bags at airports and blown up, or immediately towed away and crushed. The other option of course is to ensure that as you walk past that you scratch the f**k out of the car catching it with your keys while walking on the path where the car isn't supposed to be. Since it's parked illegally I see no reason that they should be able to make a claim against anyone for it. Get a few going like that and I'm sure people would soon find somewhere sensible to park instead. As you can see I have absolutely no sympathy for 'em at all, and that won't change.
