Bad roads blamed for rise in car suspension breakdowns

RAC figures show a big spike in call-outs for suspension faults, while hybrid wiring issues are on the rise, too

Suspension and spring-related breakdowns increased by 33 per cent in 2015, as the poor state of UK roads took its toll on the nation?s cars, according to exclusive RAC call-out data.

It was the biggest single increase of breakdowns, narrowly ahead of hybrid wiring faults and speed limiter issues ? up 30 per cent and 29 per cent respectively.

?The increase in suspension and spring faults might well be as a result of the continuing poor state of local roads ? while motorways and other major routes are part of one of the biggest improvement programmes in a generation,? he said. ?Motorists remain concerned about the condition of local roads and the lack of ring-fenced funds to improve them.

Have to agree. Councils were given money year on year to fix potholes and by the looks of it haven't bothered to do anything with the cash. The roads are deteriorating with no end in sight.

I have had to replace front springs and track rod ends and now need new drop links, but personally I think the problem is not the pot holes but all the speed humps / ramps which all seem to vary in size and height and seem to have appeared in nearly every side road and many main roads.
The pot holes you can at least try and avoid them, but the speed humps cannot be avoided and some that I have come across have been at least 8 inches high and towering above the kerbside and one in particular I have found that unless you are in a 4x4 then your exhaust or under-body scrapes the hump, which has huge gouge marks in it as proof of the damage it does.

Yes, I remember when speed bumps were introduced, the manager for Dingbro (motor factors) telling me that there had been an increase in sales of shock absorbers etc...

And surely it is not just the vehicles that suffer from the speed humps, they can give tremendous jolts to those in a car but what about someone in an Ambulance !!
All the preparation such as neck braces etc to ensure of not aggravating any possible spinal injuries only to have to undergo bucking bronco standard jolts from speed humps on the way to hospital......................madness !!

most of the roads round me are disintigratining in front of our eyes mostly cause by double decker buses, the tarmac looks like crazy paving ffs, they only do repairs when the water has got thru and the road has sunk in places aboot 8 inch.
