Drivers should be forced to pay per mile to save the planet

Motorists should be forced to pay to drive on the busiest roads to slash greenhouse gas emissions, the Government's climate change watchdog says today.
The Climate Change Committee, led by former CBI chief Lord Turner, wants ministers to introduce compulsory road pricing to prevent global warming.
Under the controversial scheme, cars would be fitted with electronic tags and tracked either by satellite or roadside beacon. Charges would rise at times of peak congestion to around ?1.50 a mile.

Heavy traffic on the M25 in Essex. Under a controversial scheme cars would be fitted with electronic tags and charged at times of peak congestion

In a report to MPs, the advisers called for a carbon revolution - with thousands of wind turbines, nuclear power stations and
1.7million electric cars - if Britain is to meet its legally binding greenhouse gas targets.
The report also suggested 'eco-driving' tips - such as not braking suddenly and sticking to the speed limit - should be taught in driving lessons to reduce emissions. Past attempts to introduce road pricing were scrapped after opposition from motorists and civil liberty campaigners.
In 2004, the then Transport Secretary, Alistair Darling, announced plans for a national road pricing scheme. Motorists would pay between 2p and ?1.50 a mile depending on the time of day and levels of congestion.
But the idea was shelved after more than 1.8million people signed a petition against the green tax.
Now in its first annual report, the Climate Change Committee says there is a 'good economic rationale to introduce road pricing and thereby reduce congestion' and that 'the Government should seriously consider road pricing'.
Its chief executive David Kennedy claimed road pricing would slash carbon emissions - as long as other car taxes were not cut.
'We are not calling for the Government to rush ahead and introduce road pricing, but it shouldn't come off the agenda,' he said. 'It would have significant carbon benefits.'
Ministers have previously insisted road pricing should be 'revenue neutral' and that motorists would not be worse off.

But Edmund King, president of the AA, said: 'It would be political suicide for any party to back road pricing. Our latest opinion poll found that 77 per cent of people are opposed to it.
'In terms of climate change, what we have seen is vehicle technology makes more of a difference than fiscal policy.
'Motorists are already switching to greener and cleaner cars, working more from home and sharing cars. They don't need the threat of being beaten with road pricing to get them to change their habits.'
The Climate Change Committee was set up to advise ministers on how to meet Britain's target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.
However, its report warns that emissions have been falling at a rate of less than 1 per cent a year over the past five years.

Why are we in the UK always the first to get scrued with this global warming thing?
We cant make a difference on our own, not until the whole world joins in!
This is another bullsh*t idea by the government and the insurance companies to rake in ?millions from motorists.

Like Edmund King said, it would be political suicide, so it won't happen.

I actively campaigned for MART against the conggestion charge in Manchester when that was mooted. I went door-to-door collecting signatures for a petition, and I collected literally thousands of signatures from those against the charge. The number of people who supported the charge who I spoke to was 2, so I think the 77% Edmung King quoted will increase rapidly when people are faced with a realistic proposal.

The fact is that this idea won't work. What will happen is people will avoid the higher cost routes by driving down side street which are less able to cope with the traffic. This will lead to more traffic standing idle, waiting down narrow streets, burning fuel whilst not moving, which will lead to an increase in carbon emissions and make side streets less safe for children.

Global warming is bullshit. It's ~~~~in freezin here and we has another shitty summer, AGAIN. It's all designed to screw more money out of you. I was in Cairo a couple of years agon and the smog is unbelievable. I was talking to a local anbout the pollution and he said he doesn't give a shit because the petrol is so cheap they put up with the pollution. Britain like to be seen as leaders on Green matters but everything involves ~~~~in taxing us and fining us.

              THE TRUTH
              The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

When will the government realise our pockets aren't bottomless, and being charged to drive at such high rates would quite litterally cripple the everyday mans budget !!!!

I would be happy to pay a small fee per mile, but they would have to:

                      1 abolish Fuel duty
2 Pay me for any delays caused by Roadworks or road closures
3 Pay me for any diversions
4 Stop lying about Humans influencing Climate change

churchill once said 'for a country to attempt to tax itself into prosperity is like standing in a bucket and attempting to lift one's self by the handle'

when will government realise that there is only so far a nation can be pushed!!!

funny how state cars aren't those little electric 40 mile radius jobbies isnt it?

a case of do as i say not as i do.

i'd trust my dog further than i would trust this bunch of ~~~nuts!!!
