You wouldn?t expect to drink champagne from Sheffield, chianti from Keighley or Scotch whisky from Scarborough...
But Newcastle Brown Ale lovers learned yesterday that the legendary tipple is to be brewed in Yorkshire.
Makers Scottish & Newcastle angered Geordies and millions across the world by announcing that production of ?Broon? will switch from their Tyneside plant to John Smith?s Brewery in Tadcaster from the middle of next year.
They said the Dunston plant in Gateshead was closing as it was no longer viable due to the recession, but they would make ?every effort? to find jobs for the 63 workers under threat.
Production of Best Scotch beer and Exhibition ale will also end. Staff learned the news as they arrived yesterday and talks with unions are under way.
Union leader Jeff Tate, of Unite, said: ?To see a day when Newcastle Brown Ale is no longer brewed on Tyneside is a disgrace.?
