Motorists could face ?100 fines if they pass too close to cyclists

Motorists could be slapped with ?100 fines for driving too close to cyclists under plans being considered by the Government.

Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said he is considering Australian-style laws which set a ?minimum passing distance? between cyclists and other vehicles in law.

?We remain interested in the change and are keeping it under review,? Mr Goodwill told MPs.

It follows a petition signed by more than 16,000 cycling campaigners calling for Britain to follow the lead of South Australia and introduce a new law stipulating motorists can not pass closer than one metre to cyclists - or 1.5 metres on faster roads.

Minimum passing distances are already in place in other European countries including France and Germany.

Team GB veteran Chris Boardman has backed calls for minimum one-metre gap between cars and bikes, along the lines of a law in place in Australia

I've to wonder how this will be enforced, but really if a car driver drives too close to a cyclist, then should that not be considered as dangerous driving, in which case a driving ban for 6 months would be more appropriate... I think there should also be fines for cyclists though, because I passed one the other day on a narrow road, where there was a separate cycle laneprovided for safety that the cyclist wasn't using....

fine for city centres with CCTV everywhere, but in the countryside they'll be struggling to get their 100 squids

iv passed many cyclists on the roads that have cycle lanes and they still choose to ride on the road
happens all the time here so they should be fined too for non use of a cycle lane

Eh up, theres a theead on herez, about not declearing war on moterists.

If the peasants with push chairs & people walking 2 abreast were given
fines, then us cyclistts would be more likly to use cycle paths.

better to be waved at than be redesigned by a car

Cyclist doesn’t pay for the roads and they are given so much freedom what is wrong with this country, what happens when a cyclist gets too close to a motorist? Will the cyclist be fined?

and will cyclists who undercut buses (usually complain when they get squished for that) and cars with less than the minimum distance also be fined, or is this one law for motorist cash cows and one for cyclists?

That was probably 19,000 miles, but it had an odometer correction once reprogrammed
