US in shock after nightclub massacre

The "terrorist" attacker, who shot dead 50 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando, has been named as Omar Mateen.

Authorities are investigating whether the gunman, a 29-year-old US citizen of Afghan descent, had ties to Islamist extremism, according to US TV networks.

The gunman, carrying a device thought to be a bomb and armed with an assault rifle and a handgun, opened fire in the Pulse Orlando bar in the early hours of Sunday morning before taking hostages.

The attacker was involved with a three-hour stand-off with officers before SWAT teams stormed the building and shot him dead.

Some 52 people are being treated for injuries in hospitals in Orlando, according to authorities.

Law Enforcement Agent Danny Banks described the attack as an "act of terrorism" and said: "Whether that is domestic terrorist activity or an international one, that is something we will certainly get to the bottom of."

Well let me see.................. did the child with the first stick get it legally? Is he mentally fit to own and use a stick? Is he hitting the other child in self defence?

Maybe allowing both children to have a stick and showing them how to use the stick correctly might be the best way........... what happens if a bigger mentally disturbed child with an illegaly obtained automatic stick decides to use his stick on the two children? Surely the deterrent of them having their own stick will prevent a playground massacre.

shot the whole day down & wrote off umpteen people.

There has always been some discontent about the "Right to Bear Arms" which is part of the American Constitution, and in a country so vast and varied it is possible to see both sides of the argument. However, what I cannot understand is the legal availability of automatic and semi automatic weapons of military grade weapons !! Why is there any real requirement of those type of weapons to any ordinary individual ? Surely if those weapons were removed from the arsenals available this would reduce this type of massacre occurring by the simple fact that the individual would be unable to continuously fire at a trapped crowd.

Do you own firearms? If you did then the hype around '1000 rounds a minute' AR15's would be BS to you. An average ability shooter with a bolt action rifle can crack off 30-40 rounds a minute............... it must also be noted that an automatic rifle will fire so fast that the shooter cannot accurately hit a target where as a bolt action requires more concentration and thus the shooter can acquire a target for each shot....... either ways take away the guns and loonies will use knives or petrol bombs........... the problem is the nutjobs America seems to produce in mass quantities .......... dont blame guns, blame the failures of society and govt.
