You will soon need a ?145 TV licence to watch BBC iPlayer

A legal loophole allowing viewers to watch BBC programmes on the iPlayer without paying for a TV licence is about to close. From 1 September, viewers will have to pay the ?145.50 annual licence fee to watch any BBC content on the iPlayer, including live and on-demand programmes.

The rule applies to every way in which the iPlayer can be watched, including through a Smart TV, laptop or computer, tablets and mobile phones, TV boxes from the likes of Sky and Virgin Media, games consoles, streaming devices like the Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV, and any other device which is used to watch television.

The BBC has said the rule also applied to content which is shown exclusively online, such as BBC Three, which recently became iPlayer-only.

"From 1 September 2016 you will need to be covered by a TV licence to download or watch BBC programmes on demand, including catch up TV, on BBC iPlayer," the broadcaster said. "This applies to any device and provider you use."

If you are caught watching without one you can be prosecuted and fined up to ?1,000 plus legal costs and possible compensation. The maximum fine is ?2,000 in Guernsey and ?500 in Jersey.

Viewers who already have a licence do not need to do anything. They are covered to watch BBC content whenever and however the like. Those eligible for a free licence are also covered.

All countries will go the same way eventually....A " Broadcast Charge "........they're in the process I believe of phasing it in,in Ireland soon

No excuses then.......laptop,tablet,pc,tv...once you have any sort of package with Service Provider...you're liable for it

Can honestly say i've not watched live tv for years.. But the BBC are like a law unto themselves.. Oh wait they are.. You dont pay they take you to court.... This is one of the things which truly does pee me off, but very hard to fight the big corporation who just demand you give them the money 'in case' you watch tv by any device which is capable of receiving it..

So it’s only if you watch BBC, there needs to be a way to remove all BBC channels from all your devices, no BBC no fee, is how it should be.
I wonder if ever will the BBC become independent and stand on its own two feet!!!

Its a license to watch LIVE broadcast even if its not BBC content? now they've added iplayer catchup to the fee.
Funny thing is most of their programs are either repeats or Shiite game shows so I haven't bothered for years to even waste the electricity on there useless broadcasts.
as to their detection vans think you'll find they deluxe sandwich boxes

                    Quote:
"I've reported before on the time I met an unattended TV detector van up close and personal. It was an empty (apart from some sandwiches) minibus with blacked out windows, enormous TV Licensing logo and implausible (to anyone with a basic understanding of RF) looking aerials stuck on. Seems to me that the most important piece of equipment there was the enormous TV Licensing logo."

In any other country it would be considered a tax. They may as well just add it to everyone's council tax and get it over with. 100% off for the blind, unless theirs goldfish can operate the remote control

My daughter's don't pay it just bin the letters , l even get letters at my garage , there is a TV there too just bin letters, l read even if they come to your house the most they do is say start paying from today , courts cost to much
Can you imagine if they take everyone to court there wouldn't be any staff left to go around the houses , if they knock your door and catch you they would have to be a witness at your case , no ones going to do that
