Firefighters 'face sack unless they agree to new terms'

Firefighters face being sacked and only getting their jobs back if they agree to new 12-hour shifts, a union has claimed.

The Fire Brigades Union said it was "astonished" at plans by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to change working conditions for 1,200 firefighters.

The authority said it had no intention to make anyone redundant but was introducing new shifts next April under moves to save money amid Government funding cuts.

The FBU said the proposed new arrangements mean that one in five posts will be cut, with the rest having worse conditions imposed on them, while firefighters would hardly see their families under the new 12-hour shift arrangements.

The union's Greater Manchester brigade secretary Gary Keary said:

Following the lead of the government in imposing contracts regardless of the consequences. Then the government will say it's a local issue, nothing to do with them etc, after which the government will publish how well the firefighters are paid, that they have golden pensions, great T&C's... the usual government bulls*t that the will agree with.

        I see nothing wrong....
Two 13.5 hour night shifts plus two 10.5 hour day shifts = 48 hours per week.
Two 12 hour day shifts plus two 12 hour night shifts = 48 hours per week.
Either way they are only working 48 hours per week.
This is exactly why we need Union, any company can now impose anything they want, and they just sack everybody and make them reapply under a new contract. We are surely going backwards.

The only issue they have been threatened if they don?t work those hours hahaha

Never mind, May and co will quietly lose the WTD when they leave the EU.... at which point people can be asked to work 72 hour weeks and be sacked if they don't.

Aye, working 72hr on a zero hours contract, so even easier for the management to get shot of you if you don't play to their tune or complain about any health&asafety or fatigue issues.

Brother Corbyn says he will sort it all out, once he's sorted out his own party. Oh dear
