Sale of Kodi 'fully-loaded' streaming boxes faces legal test

A legal case concerning the sale of video-streaming set-top boxes that can access subscription content for free, begins on Tuesday.

So-called "fully-loaded Kodi boxes" have gained popularity, but the legality of their sale is in question.

Middlesbrough trader Brian Thompson is accused of selling equipment that "facilitated the circumvention" of copyright protection measures.

The trial has been described as a landmark case by industry watchers.

Mr Thompson will not enter a plea on Tuesday, but has told local media he intends to challenge the charges.

Kodi is free software designed to bring videos, music, games and photographs together in one easy-to-use application.

It began life as a program called Xbox Media Centre (XBMC) that added a feature-rich media player to the original Xbox games console.

The open-source project was developed by volunteers and can now be installed on a variety of devices including smartphones and computers.

It can also be loaded on to television-connected devices such as the Amazon Fire stick or Apple TV box, although it is not supported by those manufacturers.

A legal case concerning the sale of video-streaming set-top boxes on which subscription content can be accessed for free begins on Tuesday.

No, but if you interpret his signage as though you have no knowledge of piracy (except Long John Silver) then those would be the free movie and television program Of course people with suspicious, or guilty, minds would immediately think "Jack Sparrow"

Why does he have to advertise fully loaded?
People and the law don't understand that streaming or torrenting isn't illegal, it all falls on what you're streaming or torrenting, this guy was after making few quid, but the law has no mercy!!!

This isn't the same guy but

A businessman who sold "fully loaded" set-top boxes to pubs and clubs, enabling them to watch subscription TV for free, must pay ?250,000.
Malcolm Mayes, from Hartlepool, admitted breaching the Copyright, Designs & Patents Act by advertising and selling adapted IPTV boxes.
The 65-year-old must pay ?170,000 costs and an ?80,000 Proceeds of Crime Order was imposed by Teesside Crown Court.
Two 10-month prison sentences were suspended for a year.
Mayes sold the boxes - often referred to as "Android" or "Kodi" boxes - to pubs and clubs across the country for ?1,000 each and advertised the devices as "100% legal".

Trading standards chief says businessman Malcolm Mayes is not "a Robin Hood-type character".

So he was done by Trading standards for "Goods not fit for purpose"??? or for copyright breach?? Is that under Trading standards jurisdiction!

"Ian Harrison, Trading Standards manager, said: "In pleading guilty, he has accepted it is illegal to sell a device that allows the free viewing of pay-to-view television"

Perhaps TS should prosecute BBC for selling repeat programs as "Live broadcasts" hard to disprove since some actors have deceased Expect to get most of your TV licence refunded
