    Sitting indoors while your car defrosts outside is ILLEGAL, police warn drivers

    Police are warning motorists not to leave their engine running while their car defrosts

    Now the winter weather has arrived and your car is frozen in the morning, you might be tempted to leave your engine running to let it defrost.

    Well, don?t. Police are warning motorists that they?re not only at risk of getting their car stolen, but it?s also illegal.

    The warnings come after a spate of thefts earlier this week of cars that were left unlocked on the drive with their keys in the ignition.

    West Midlands Police said officers are now investigating 15 thefts after a further 11 vehicles, with a combined value of more than ?200,000, were taken on the same morning after being left unlocked on the drive with their keys in the ignition.

    Sergeant Andy Gregory, Force Crime Reduction officer, said: ?It may be surprising but we continue to see people leaving their cars with the keys in on their drives on icy mornings.

    He added: ?It takes an opportunistic thief just seconds to jump into a vehicle and drive it off so it really isn?t worth the risk. Car security has a come a long way but by leaving keys in the car and the engine running it couldn?t be easier for someone to steal it.

    ?Sometimes people think they are being security conscious by locking the door of the car with a spare set of keys, while leaving the other set in the ignition. However thieves will quickly and happily smash a window in order to drive away in your vehicle.?

    And neighbouring force Staffordshire Police reminded motorists that it?s not only risky to leave your car running ? but illegal.

    The force said: ?Drivers should always be in control of their vehicle when the engine is running, even when you?re loading or unloading shopping or baggage. Leaving the engine running to ?warm up? during the winter months not only risks having the vehicle stolen, it?s against the law.?

    It also pointed out that your insurance company might not pay out if your vehicle is stolen in this way

    I'm getting sick and tired of being told what I can and can't do ffs, i thought rape is illegal, but it didn't stop South Yorkshire Police from covering up thousands of sexual assaults in Rotherham, and how about those driverless cars going to come out soon are they illegal when no driver in the seat?...

      It's not illegal to leave your car running while on your own property, otherwise garages would have police sat in them waiting to hand out tickets 24/7 when people were having their car serviced or MOT'd. Leaving it on the road running, that is illegal and your insurance won't pay out if it's stolen.

        I'm confused with this one is it a law, a regulation, a statutory instrument or not legal (illegal) these are all different things? Also the highway code is a notes of guidance on how to drive safely and with consideration to other users.
        Also its the responsibility of local authority to require drivers to switch engines off! to save the environment
        not to fine but advise
        LOCAL AUTHORITY POWERS TO REQUIRE DRIVERS TO SWITCH OFF ENGINES WHEN PARKED Guidance Issued Under Section 88 of the Environment Act 1995

        STAFF DUTIES
        2.2 Specific duties and job descriptions should be prepared by individual local authorities. However, these will generally include the following:
        • Carrying out enforcement work detailed in this Guidance;

        Offering advice to vehicle users, particularly those in breach of the Regulations;

        • Issuing Fixed Penalty Notices to vehicle users (in practice, drivers) where vehicles are found to be in contravention of legislation and a request to comply is refused;

          Bad reporting, policeman not knowing his job, local authority being bullies who knows which.

          It also depends on the type of vehicle. If it is a dual purpose vehicle like a Land Rover then it is legal to leave it running on public roads without anyone in the drivers seat.

          They can do bugger all if it is on your land anyway. There are lots of reasons why you may need it to be running, not least to charge the battery or run some other equipment using it as a power source.
