LABOUR CRUISES TO GLASGOW BY-ELECTION VICTORY

Gordon Brown has survived his latest by-election test as Labour comfortably cruised to victory in the Glasgow North East by-election.

It won the seat made vacant by the resignation of former Commons Speaker Michael Martin with a majority of 8,111 over the SNP.

Despite widespread predictions the far-right British National Party would do well, by putting the Tories into fourth place and saving its deposit, in the event it did neither. The Tories' Ruth Davidson pushed the BNP's Charlie Baillie into fourth place, gaining 1,075 votes to his 1,013.

The result will have come as a considerable relief to the Prime Minister after the humiliation of seeing Glasgow East fall to the nationalists last year and seeing Norwich North fall to the Tories in July.

Mr Brown had taken the risk of campaigning in the constituency, and in his victory speech, Labour's Willie Bain declared: "This is a great day for Labour.

"This is a resounding victory for Gordon Brown and Labour. This by-election has been about many things but most of all it has been about jobs and the economy."

Mr Bain continued: "Tonight people have had their say. They have backed Gordon Brown in his efforts to secure our economic recovery, they have sent a resounding 'No' to Alex Salmond and his treatment of our great city and a resounding 'No' to David Cameron."

You could also apply this list to the rest of GB because they've done sod all but ruin us as far as I can see. Or maybe they're doing the best they can in ever changing and ever harsh times and perhaps we are being far too critical, but honestly, either way the end result hasn't been good. Time for change after 12 years methinks.

To be honest I don't think it's so much about ideology and patriotism any more, if it ever was, it's all about how much money they can cream from the public into their own pockets which also has a lot to do with power. But then what do we know about running countries ? We're just nobodies who type our opinions on internet forums as though we know any better or could do any better when the fact is none of us have spent even 1 hour running a city let alone the whole country....that's just putting things into perspective. I still feel it's time for change though. I think Labour has been in charge 4 years too long. Now the crap's really hit the fan in the last couple of years, and it's time for them to go.

I agree Labour have done a crap job, but the trouble is look at the alternatives. The recession would have been worse under the Tories, with their policies such as deregulatiion of banks and the like. The problems occurred because the banks weren't regulated enough. They're good at saying how Labour got everything wrong, but it's says to sit and point when you're the opposition.

The Lib Dems haven't got a clue. They make ridiculous promises that they know they're not going to have to keep to lure as many voters as possible because they know they won't have to deliver on them because they won't get in power. They have completely conflicting policies at local level. My local MP (Andrew Stunnel, Hazel Grove) has based his election campaign every election since 1992 (the earliest I can remember) on "Vote Lib Dem to keep the Tories out because Labour can't win here". And I expect that many others do the same. I don't even know what his policies are becaue his entire campaign is based on keeping the Conservatives out.

Labour might be doing a crap job but they're the best available.

This is where you and me disagree, personally I can't honestly see how it could have been worse under anyone else, after all who's to say we'd even be in a recession now if we had another political party in charge ? The fact is Labour have done nothing but ruin this country since they took charge in the mid 90's. In fact, they're more than a dictatorship in disguise because we clearly have no say!

And we might not have gone into a war in Iraq, the reasons for which was set up as usual like Vietnam was, if we had another group in charge - but it's all ifs, buts and maybes - the fact is we are in this position and it's a case of what do we do about it? And are Labour up to it? I think not.
