Drinking alcohol could cause the average British adult to gain a pound in weight every three and a half weeks, according to a pharmacist.

A glass of wine contains around 100 calories

The typical Brit drinks over 1,000 calories a week in alcohol alone, said Lloydspharmacy, which devised the Alculator.
For someone who does little or no exercise, that could bring a rapid increase in weight.
The Alculator allows people to input their height, weight and typical drinking habits.
It then reveals how their drinking compares to the recommended limits, and predicts how much weight they will gain each year due to alcohol.

A worrying number of people drink much more than the recommended limits.
    Nick Mortimer, Lloydspharmacy

"Our new tool confronts the extent of alcohol consumption among British adults," said Nick Mortimer, superintendent pharmacist at Lloyds.
"A worrying number of people drink much more than the recommended limits and over the course of their lifetime this can have devastating effects on physical and mental health."
Researchers found the average Brit drinks over two litres of alcohol a week - around 3.7 pints of lager, or 8.5 large glasses of wine.
That works out at more than 84 times their bodyweight over their lifetime.
The UK has one of the highest rates of binge drinking in Europe, according to the charity Drinkaware.
They say alcohol is directly responsible for 33,000 British deaths every year.
