Man shot dead 'robbed of ?10,000'

A businessman died after being shot and robbed of ?10,000 as he left work at a money exchange firm in Manchester.

Khurram Ashraf, 28, was shot in the stomach outside Global Transfer in Stamford Road, Longsight. He died seven hours later in hospital.

The gunman, who confronted both the victim and a group of his friends, also stole Mr Ashraf's laptop during the attack, at 1820 GMT on Thursday.

A 20-year-old man from Longsight has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The road was cordoned off after the shooting and the police helicopter was involved in the search for the attacker.

    Group confronted

A police spokesman said a post-mortem examination would take place later.

Det Supt Serena Kennedy, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "This investigation is in the very early stages, but this is clearly a tragic incident that has resulted in a man losing his life.

"Our initial inquiries have established the victim and his friends were confronted and then at some point, the weapon was fired and sadly the victim was hit. That injury proved fatal.

"I understand there will be concerns in the community at this time, and I would like to reassure people we are doing everything we can to find out what happened.

"This appears to be a tragic, isolated incident and I would appeal to anyone who has information that will help us solve this crime to come forward."
