London's Big Ben to fall silent for four years

Big Ben will fall silent next week for four years as "major conservation works" are carried out on the tower which houses the bell, UK Parliament announced Monday.

The chimes emanating from the bell, one of London's most famous attractions, have kept time in the British capital for 157 years.

At noon on Monday, August 21, Big Ben will sound for the last time until 2021.

The repairs are estimated to cost around £29 million, or more than $42 million.

Londoners needn't worry though; Big Ben will continue to chime for "important national events" such as New Year's Eve and Remembrance Sunday.

To be honest they should bulldoze it and the palace that it's connected to, save a fortune and get rid of the leeches who go there every now and again to collect expenses they haven't incurred.

              Big Ben repair bill doubles….ffs
Elizabeth Tower, which houses the Big Ben clock, is undergoing conservation work that was set to cost £29 million, the estimated cost of repairing the tower that houses Big Ben has doubled to £61m, authorities have said.

The increase is down to a better understanding of the work required and an unreliable original estimate, a spokeswoman for the House of Commons said.

The repair costs for the ding dong has gone from £29M > £40M > and so far now to £61M...and no dought it will still go higher.
All that money being wasted, just so the MPs can know when its dinner time !

(would it not be cheaper & quicker to knock it down & have a full rebuild, using some Polish chaps?)
