    Rising toll of 'Waynettas'

with three times as many women as men signing onto sickness benefits under New Labour

The type of people mocked by Harry Enfield's character Waynetta Slob have increased

The number of women claiming state sickness benefits has boomed since Labour came to power, a study showed yesterday.
Women have been signing on as sick at three times the rate of men since the late 1990s, it found.
Around 300,000 women have joined the long-term sickness benefit rolls since 1997 compared with 100,000 men.

Now almost as many women as men live on incapacity benefit and similar handouts paid to those who say they are too ill to work.
The increase means that the type of people mocked by Harry Enfield's characters Wayne and Waynetta Slob now live in an era of equality in benefits dependency.
The study, by researchers from Sheffield Hallam University, found that 1.1million women now claim sickness benefit.

In some parts of the country, more than one in ten of all women are 'on the sick'.
