Wives of terrorist suspects 'CAN claim benefits', say European judges

Benefits win: The three women are married to terrorist suspects believed to be linked with Osama bin Laden

A European court has instructed Britain to drop restrictions which limit social security benefits paid to the wives of terror suspects.
Ministers imposed tight rules on payouts to stop the money falling into the hands of alleged Al Qaeda fanatics.
Under the restrictions, cash payments were strictly limited and families had to show receipts to justify every penny of spending.
But yesterday the European Court of Justice said there was no danger of the handouts being used to fund terror and branded the measures unlawful.
The judges said the money was for the 'essential needs' of the families and it was 'hard to imagine' how it could be misused.
Critics said the ruling undermined Britain's right to decide its own affairs.
Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: 'Once again British taxpayers are having to fork out because of a decision made by meddling and unaccountable European courts.
'The British Government are the people we elect to decide how to spend our money, not some European court.'
The case was brought by three women whose husbands are on the United Nations list of terror suspects.
Whitehall officials have refused to name the men involved, but under international rules imposed after the September 11 attacks, those on the list have their assets frozen.
The Treasury interpreted this to include benefit payments to their families, who were forced to comply with the strict conditions.
In April 2008 the case was passed to Europe. Yesterday's ruling is now binding on Britain and all other EU countries.
The judges stated: 'It is hard to imagine how those funds could be turned into means that could be used to support terrorist activities, for the benefits are fixed at a level intended to meet only the strictly vital needs of the persons concerned.'
The Treasury said it noted the ruling and was considering its response.
