    Lada's back (no joke):

Russia's tin can on wheels trundles our way again

Those who drove them always pointed out how cheap they were to buy. Everyone else made jokes about tin cans on wheels.
Now, after a 13-year absence, the Lada is coming back to Britain.
The byword for budget motoring from the 1980s is being relaunched within the next two years as a credit-crunch cruiser.

Now, after a 13-year absence, the Lada is coming back to Britain

This time, Soviet Russia's infamous car for the masses will be backed by Renault's money and expertise.
Lada (UK) closed in 1997, and until now the cars have only been available as imports.
The new version is one of a number of cheap cars likely to be on sale for less than ?5,000, undercutting some budget brands from Japan and Korea which have done well in the economic downturn.

what do you call a lada with a sunroof ? a skip

Many of the newcomers were originally produced for emerging nations.

Renault is also backing Romanian firm Dacia which will have two budget models - the Sandero hatch and Logan saloon - for around ?5,000 here within two years, the company told motoring magazine Auto Express.

But the race to get the budget models into Britain is likely to be won by the Indian company Tata, which produces the world's cheapest car, India's ?1,500 Nano.
The British version, which requires higher safety standards, will be around ?4,500 when it comes out next year.
The Great Wall company of China is also hoping to launch its Hover5 model through the British network of Daihatsu dealerships.
Steve Norman, vice president of Renault, said: 'The UK was one of the few markets where Lada was a success.
'I'm confident the time is right to bring it back. The Chinese won't get in before us. But they will become a threat between 2012-2015.'
Like Ladas, the Czech-built Skodas were ridiculed for years until VW took over the firm - and they became one of the most soughtafter cars on the road.

The word on the street is the reason why they left the UK was because they were unable to get the emissions down.

Something to do with they used a 'carbaretter' which has two solenoid valves on it, main and idle (bit like on a washing machine) These were a 'same priciple' as fuel injection, instead of a HIGH PRESSURE squirt, it was a low pressure (mechanical fuel pump ) dribble, dribble of fuel.

The system did include a lambarda probe , this was controlled
by the module called the AFR - Air Fuel Ratio, this was located under the
passenger seat, which would get damp.

To test the AFR module it had something like 12 pins, simply using an ohm
meter would reveil if the unit was good or bad.

The fuseboxes were doomed to fail the first time it rained, under the wiper scuttle in the rain

They also had a bulkhead mounted relay that disabled the starter motor
once the engine was running (alternater triggered). BUT the ignition
lock was a 'crank once only' type

Meat-Head-Motors is not reasponsable for information in this post, due to staff being to young or to old to remeber them. Infomation has come from a third party, some thick taxi driver called 'Mick' who used to work for a Lada dealer here in Meat-City

Dacia, 20 odd years ago we had to do the PDI's on all the Dacia Duster's

          DIFFLOCK.com - Buyer's Guide (look at 0-60 times)

What a pile if shite they was, every one of them had to have the G\box removed (the 1st one we done took 5 hours to get the box out, got that down to an hour after the 20th one) to replace the tiny paper mache clutch they was fitted with (if left in would have lasted about 4 miles) and a couple of g\box mods. All of them also had to have the exhaust manifiold removed as when they built them that they didnt machine the holes where it bolted to the downpipe, it was about half inch restricting the flow, if that wasnt done the top speed was about 35mph and then it started to overheat, all the spark plugs had to be replaced as well as the porcelain upper part of the plug popped out, they also all had a overheating problem as the water pump impeller was for to small to pump the water round. They was so cheap the dealer in our area sold loads of them so what with the PDI work and the warranty work these things kept us real busy for about 2 years. I was driving one back to the workshop one day and I thought I would try out the 4WD system, I stopped engaged the front hubs, reved the shite out of it and dumped the clutch (dry tarmac road) it made this horrendous chopping noise, what it had done was launched the engine forward and the big fixed metal 1960 cooling fan they was fitted with had chopped the radiator to pieces. Maybe the new Duster is better !!

They went off the production because they did have a clue to run the car on unleaded petrol.

They were running on 4 star petrol, I know a friend of mine had 1 and the worse thing you could have is when you have to change the starter motor, you will be swearing to Russians all along.

I remeber they used to use them as taxis in Falkirk so they must be good reliable motors.

I used to have a Lada Samara , Best car I have ever had and the first car I ever took round the clock.
Only got rid of it because it was getting old and I knew parts would be difficult to get.
