More than one in ten drivers has had an accident after swerving to avoid a pothole, a survey has revealed.
More than half of drivers think the condition of the UK's roads is unacceptable, while 58 percent believe that the next Government should make road repairs a main priority.
Britain's roads descended into pothole chaos during the Christmas 2009 snowstorms. It's only now that the full extent of the damage it's causing is becoming clear.
In February 2010 drivers made almost 2,000 claims as a result of pothole damage, at a cost of ?2.85m. In Surrey alone there are 1,998 officially registered potholes; it's no surprise that motorists are struggling to avoid them.
The individual street with the most potholes is officially Smithy Lane in Huddersfield, with more than one per metre of road - 124 potholes across a 120-metre stretch.
And cyclists are suffering too, with 699 riders this year making official complaints about hazardous roads to the CTC, the UK's national cycling organisation.
