John Prescott made a peer in House of Lords

Labour warhorse John Prescott was made a peer yesterday and joked: "I'll be the only thumping Lord there."

The ex-deputy PM - who in 2001 famously thumped an egg-thrower while on the election trail - joins 55 new members of the Lords, including former Labour ministers John Reid, Des Browne and John Hutton.

His wife Pauline said: "I'm immensely proud. It's recognition of a brilliant career and allows him to keep campaigning."

Prezza, 72 on Monday, has previously feared a Lords seat would sideline him.

But Pauline is thought to have talked him into accepting the honour. Prezza - who at the election quit as Hull MP after 40 years in the Commons - said: "I welcome the chance to continue to campaign in Parliament."

Other notable new peers include former Northern Ireland first minister Ian Paisley, ex-Conservative party leader Michael Howard and Sir Ian Blair, who served as head of the Met Police.

Former Labour Home Secretary David Blunkett yesterday threatened to sue the Government for the ?30 cost of his ID card after the new Tory-Lib Dem coalition scrapped the scheme that he once championed.

Is it April the 1st ....
