Derailed Train Left Hanging: Nine Injured

Nine passengers have been injured and a train carriage has been left dangling over an embankment after a derailment in Scotland.

In what appears to be a lucky escape for 60 travellers, dramatic photographs show one carriage of the two-car ScotRail train hanging precariously over a steep drop.

The train is thought to have hit a boulder on the track near the Falls of Cruachan power station in Argyll and Bute.

It is thought the boulder landed on the track after a recent rockfall.

Emergency services said all 60 passengers on the 6.20pm service from Glasgow to Oban were rescued with nine hurt though there are no life-threatening injuries.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue service said the incident sparked a "major deployment" of fire crews, with firefighters then working to gain access to the carriages.

A spokesman for ScotRail said an investigation is under way.

    No one was seriously injured

He said: "All passengers are safely off the train. An investigation is already under way into the cause of the incident by appropriate agencies and industry partners."

The ambulance service said there were some "walking wounded" but stressed that the bulk of the injuries were minor.

A spokesman said: "Initially it was thought there was about 50 casualties, but it's nowhere near that.

"There's quite a lot of walking wounded. There's a couple of bumps to necks and backs and things like that."

He said a number of crews which were initially sent to the scene were stood down once more details emerged.

Ambulance and MoD helicopters were also called to the scene because of the remoteness of the area, he said.
