Taxpayers were furious last night after MPs were told they can go over their expenses limits if they need the extra cash.
New watchdog the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) gave politicians the green light to spend more than the cap of ?110,000 on staff and ?13,000 on office rent.
IPSA?s head Andrew McDonald also gave the go-ahead to students working for MPs as interns to claim back their travel or lunch costs.
He admitted writing to MPs to let them know the limits had been watered down because some were ?unhappy? about the proposed cap.
But the decisions have caused outrage in the wake of the MPs expenses scandal. Mark Wallace, from the TaxPayers? Alliance, blasted: ?It makes a farce of the whole process of reforming MPs? expenses to just allow them to break the rules at the first hurdle.?
