Oil spill 'will shape how US thinks about environment'

US President Barack Obama has said the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico will have the same impact on the US psyche as 9/11.

In an interview with US website Politico, he said the disaster would "shape how we think about the environment... for years to come".

Later on Monday, Mr Obama will pay a fourth visit to the affected area and spend the night there.

On Tuesday, he will address the country on the subject from the White House.

A presidential aide said he would outline the next steps his administration would be taking over the spill.

This week, the BBC is assessing the impact of the Louisiana oil spill. Correspondents in the US, the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, Nigeria and London will be reporting for the BBC World Service, World News TV and the BBC News website.

Full coverage of the oil disaster
Mr Obama has visited Louisiana on three occasions. He will now be visiting states affected by the crisis which he has not been to so far - Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.

BP placed a containment cap on its damaged oil well earlier this month; by last week it was collecting about 15,000 barrels of oil a day.

It is estimated that some 40,000 barrels (1.7 million gallons) of oil a day might have been gushing out before the well was capped.

    The right lessons
Mr Obama said the disaster would have a lasting impact on US environmental policy.

"In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come," he said in the Politico interview.

Mr Obama vowed to "move forward in a bold way in a direction that finally gives us the kind of future-oriented… visionary energy policy that we so vitally need and has been absent for so long".

"One of the biggest leadership challenges for me going forward is going to be to make sure that we draw the right lessons from this disaster," he said.

Mr Obama said he could not predict whether the nation would make a complete transition from an oil-based economy within his lifetime, but added that "now is the time for us to start making that transition and investing in a new way of doing business when it comes to energy".

"I have no idea what new energy sources are going to be available, what technologies might drive down the price of renewable energies," he said.

"What we can predict is that the availability of fossil fuel is going to be diminishing; that it's going to get more expensive to recover; that there are going to be environmental costs that our children… our grandchildren and our great-grandchildren are going to have to bear

"seems a bit far fetched to call environmental 9/11 when its on small number of people have died and there loss of life was tragic! And bp are trying to resolve the devastation of the areas affected"
IM SORRY but i will never have any sympathy for maggie thatcher .... the bitch

To liken this to 9/11 is so far off the mark. I trust Obama didn't lose anyone in those events. And perhaps he could ensure US ratifies Kyoto Protocol if he is so bothered about the environment. That man is a real waste of space, and hopefully will not serve another term.

And for you to come out with that comment is even further off the mark.
If you actually did some research and looked around you would probably appreciate how idiotic that statement is mate. You seriously have no idea of the disaster this 'oil spill' will cause.
Its not just pumping out oil for gods sake!!!

Airborne toxins and extremely poisonous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been found in the region by the EPA. The concentrations are 100+ times the maximum safe level for human inhalation. Exposure to these airborne toxins may result in: Respiratory illness, kidney failure, birth defects, brain disorders, incapacitation, and/or death.

In the atmosphere in the gulf:

Hydrogen Sulfide. The levels that are allowed, according to the EPA... are 5 to 10 parts per billion (ppb)... They tested in the last few days, in the gulf, and the winds are carrying this to the shore.Hydrogen Sulfide safe levels ? 5 to 10 ppb, tested level this past week presently is 1,200 ppb

Benzine as well. It causes malignancies, it?s known to cause leukemia, and cancer. The safe level, according to the Environmental Protection Agency... they only allow zero to four parts per billion. (Up to 4 ppb - safe level.) The current level in the Gulf of Mexico going to the shore of all of those states and Florida, being carried by the winds is 3,000 ppb.? (750 times the ?safe? level.)
Exposure to low levels of Benzine, can cause dizzy ness, drowsiness, headaches, confusion, tremor, rapid heartbeat, and unconsciousness. And long term exposure to Benzine, can damage in the bone marrow, and lead to blood problems like leukemia. It also weakens the immune system and targets our organs, such as the kidneys, lungs, and the brain.

Methylene Chloride, safe levels of Methylene Chloride (CH2Cl2) that a person can breath in the air, and this is airborne in the gulf. Safe levels 61 parts per billion (61 ppb), the current levels that were just found a few days ago by the EPA? 3,000 to 3,400 parts per billion.? (55 times safe levels.)

Yes I understand the implications of the oil spill is more than black gooey stuff being washed up onto the shores, but to liken it to the terrorist attack of 9/11 is sick IMHO.

Obama seems to talk a lot of $$$$$ rather than environmental issues.

        Kyoto Protocol

        Top-ten emitters

What follows is a ranking of the world's top ten emitters of GHGs for 2005 (MNP, 2007).[22] The first figure is the country's or region's emissions as a percentage of the global total. The second figure is the country's/region's per-capita emissions, in units of tons of GHG per-capita:

        1. China1 – 17%, 5.8
        2. United States ? – 16%, 24.1
        3. European Union-27 ? – 11%, 10.6
        4. Indonesia2 - 6%, 12.9
        5. India – 5%, 2.1
        6. Russia ? – 5%, 14.9
        7. Brazil – 4%, 10.0
        8. Japan ? – 3%, 10.6
        9. Canada ? – 2%, 23.2
        10. Mexico – 2%, 6.4

Surely US should ratify it, or is it somehow different. Just look at their contribution per capita. It's a disgrace that they won't properly address the issue, and whilst the BP disaster is terrible for the environment/people's health for a certain area of the USA, their non ratification of the Kyoto Protocol is terrible for environment/people's health for the world.

        EDIT.

If one were to take the area being effected by the oil spill, it would be interesting to see what the impact would be if US's GHGs were in line with EU. I wonder if it would perhaps cancel the 'nasty 9/11 attack' being suffered at the moment.

Is anybody following the inquiry thats going on now about the BP oil spill?.

This guy Tony Hayward, who is the CEO of BP dont seem to be giving any info to understand what has actually happened and how to stop this spill or who knew what.

Every time, he denies knowing anything.
How can you be in a position of authority in a world wide company and not know what was going on around you.

This is the guy who would have meetings every day and authorise all the work and money.

So how can he not know anything?

Kevin Costner helps clean up oil spill

Film star Kevin Costner is to play a part in cleaning up the oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico.

BP says they will be using 32 oil separation machines owned by Costner's company to clean up the water.

Costner invested $20m (?13.46m) developing the machines, which can clean up to 210,000 gallons of oily water a day.

"I didn't come here to save the day," Costner told reporters. "I have come to participate."

BP agreed to use the 2,041kg machines, which separate oil and water using centrifuge technology, following testing last week.

Costner developed the devices through his company, Ocean Therapy Solutions.

Once the machines have separated the oil and water, the oil is stored in tanks. Officials say the devices can process 600,000 gallons a day, achieving 99 per cent purity levels without the use of chemical or biologic agents.

"This machine was designed... to fight for you," Costner said.

"It was designed to give us a fighting chance to fight back the oil, before it got us by the throat."

              Environmental disaster
Thousands of barrels of oil are still leaking into the Gulf in what many are calling the worst environmental disaster in US history.

A containment cap and another device are capturing some 25,000 barrels of oil a day, but the latest estimates suggest 35,000-60,000 barrels a day are spewing out.

The Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on 20 April, killing 11 workers.

BP has faced mounting criticism for its handling of what has become the worst environmental disaster in US history, as the leak continues to spread despite efforts to contain it.

got bored of this oil spill shit.

So on the other end of this manmade pipe, can't they put a MASSIVE vacum cleaner to suck the oil before it can escape taking the pressure off to put some JB weld in the hole?

More to the point when is the cost of fuel coimg down?

Correct. It was an American rig constructed with American labour with American parts.
But the American Government don't want this in the press while all the heat is on a British company. This is also why the hearing is a waste of time. If he turned around & openly told the world it was faulty American construction, it would cause huge problems for them. So he keeps stum & they give him an easier ride & financial help (under the counter, of course)
