Fury over Tesco?s ?1.11 bottle of wine despite....

    ....supporting Government crackdown

Caught out: Tesco has sold wine below cost price despite signing up to a Government campaign to ban giveaway prices on alcohol

Britain's biggest supermarket is being accused of encouraging binge drinking by selling bottles of wine for just ?1.11.
Tesco has supported a Government crackdown on the sale of alcohol below cost price.
Yet its stores are selling a Bulgarian Chardonnay under the Silver Rock label for as little as ?1.11 for a regular 75cl bottle.
Tesco defended the decision on the basis that the wine, which normally sells for ?2.99, has been delisted from some stores and has been reduced to a rock bottom price to shift it.
As recently as May, Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy went public with the group’s backing for efforts by the Government to ban giveaway prices.

The Silver Rock, which is 13 per cent proof, was found on sale for ?1.11 at Tesco in Linlithgow, West Lothian, this week.

Tesco confirmed it had been available across the country where managers have been authorised to cut the price to ?1.50 or less.

Dr Evelyn Gillan, chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland, said: ‘It begs the question, can you rely on supermarkets to police themselves?
‘You have to ask yourself what the consequences are of continuing not to take action and continuing to rely on supermarkets to clean up their practices.

‘Alcohol is far too cheap. There is no point in just asking people to drink responsibly and our core aim is to reduce the harm caused by alcohol.’

Not every little helps: Anti-alcohol campaigners say Tesco's low-priced wine goes against its claims it can be trusted to self-regulate

A Tesco spokesman said: ‘We have Clubcard data which shows that the vast majority of alcohol is bought with the weekly shop.
‘And when people buy into alcohol promotions their subsequent spending decreases.’
Wine writer Bill Clapperton said of the Silver Rock: ‘It’s bottom end thinking for bottom end drinking.’

I can imagine the taste of that fine wine now...piss vinegar.

This behaivour is exactly the same in every business model. If the retailers know that the pricing is going to increase in a weeks time. They flog the shit out of the lower prices while they can.

Example...If the price of petrol was increasing due to tax at midnight, every forecourt will be packed with people wanting to save that extra ?1 on a full tank.

    That reminds me...
A few years ago a guy in an area of Middlesbrough was given an ASBO banning him from going to any petrol station in the area. He was stealing petrol...not for a car...he was drinking it! Guess it tasted better than the cheap alcohol

I love that... and this ain't a go at you Canker... just coz something is cheap.. it is shite... if the same stuff was ten quid a bottle, it would taste nice?
I bought a crash helmet from Lidl a few year back.. cheap.. and one review said 'I would not trust my head in something that cheap'. but again, he probably would if it cost 3,4,5 or 10 times the price? The thing has a Tuv german rating on it.. in my eyes probably stricter than our testing.
ooops.. off at a tangent again.

Asbo means petrol drinker could face jail

From the Northern Echo, first published Thursday 3rd Feb 2005.

A MAN who was repeatedly caught drinking petrol has been banned from filling stations in part of the North-East.
Brian Taylor, 36, terrorised supermarket staff and shoppers after drinking and sniffing petrol at his local Asda filling station in South Bank, Middlesbrough, on 51 occasions.
Security camera footage, taken in the early hours in July, showed him dancing around the forecourt, seemingly high on fumes, after cutting the fuel lines and pouring himself a drink.
But on other occasions, he was aggresive and intimidating to staff and customers at the filling station who tried to stop him.
Security footage caught him both at night and in daylight taking a drink from the pumps.
Mr Taylor has now been made the subject of a four year Anti-Social Behaviour Order (Asbo) which bans him from petrol stations across Teesside and also forbids him from carrying petrol or solvents in a public place.
If he breaks the order, he could face jail.
Sergeant Bryan Tams, of Cleveland Police, said Mr Taylor's actions were a danger to himself and the general public.
He said: "People have turned up at the petrol station when the pipe has been cut, not knowing it has been cut, and when they have gone to put petrol in their car they have been sprayed all over with petrol, which is obviously very dangerous.
"I have heard reports of certain meetings when Mr Taylor turned up and absolutely stunk of petrol.
"The fumes have been so bad the meeting has had to be cancelled and he has been asked to leave the building."
It is thought Mr Taylor's actions cost thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Staff at the Asda store in South Bank last night refused to comment on Mr Taylor's actions or the Asbo.
Police have stressed they are trying to get Mr Taylor professional help for his unusual drinking problem.

No worries. A bargain is a bargain. Remember, I've been t total for over 10 years. Just the smell of wine can make me hurl my guts up.

I only have friends to convey the comparison between quality & shite. This is usually directly compared to the price.

Having said that, a friends brother used to take a calculator into the off-license...so he could work out alcohol volume per ? on the cheap drinks. The highest %vol per ? being the winner & what he would buy.

Kids today lack the imagination, & more importantly, the mathematical understanding to carry out such a homage to the great brain rot.
