ban booze during pubs final hour

PUBS could be forced to sell only soft drinks for an hour before they close under proposals to cut binge drinking.

The 'winding down' period is part of a raft of measures put forward in a Glasgow City Council report.
All Scotland's 40-plus licensing boards are legally required to adopt policies to tackle health problems caused by booze by the end of the year.
The report says: "The potential should be explored for the trial of a 'winding down' hour, where only non-alcoholic drinks are available".
But last night Tory justice spokesman John Lamont blasted the idea as "the nanny state gone mad".
Patrick Browne, chief exec of the Scottish Beer and Pub Association, added: "Many in the industry are struggling to make ends meet as it is."
The report also says supermarkets must be persuaded to stop selling cheap booze.
Labour's Jackie Baillie called them "interesting proposals".

doesn't really make sense to me.
everyone will buy 3 or 4 drinks before the final hour to see them through.
reminds me of a social club i used to drink in.
bar would close from 5pm to 6.30pm, to encourage peeps to go home for there dinner etc
all that happened was everyone stocked right up with enough beer to see them through the dark hour and a half......

Pretty much what I was thinking. People will just buy more drink before the taps are turned off. It doesn't matter how early you stop serving alcohol, everyone will just buy enough before then to get them through to the end.

Hmmm. Sounds like a poorly constucted way to deter binge drinking. Might as well raise taxes on alcohol and instill a membership plan in which you have to swipe a card per drink. Impose a limit on drinks per day

That won't work. If you go back to restricting hours it just means they have to drink quicker... then the pissed morons are all kicked out together for the mass drunken brawl & stabbing session.
