Britain may impose national booze ban

Britain may go ahead with plans to ban alcohol-related offenders across the country from all pubs and off-licences for a maximum two years after a five year delay.

Under Drinking Banning Orders (DBO), the police can prevent those repeatedly charged with anti-social and disorderly behavior under the influence of alcohol from the pubs, clubs, off-licences and certain parts of a town as well as from drinking alcohol in public.

The Home Office said it is now piloting the plan in 25 local justice areas across Britain and 25 others will join the DBO regions as from Monday adding if the results are favorable the orders could be extended to cover the whole country.

So far, 16 offenders have received DBOs which can be given to any person from the age of 16 based on the courts' decision, if they engage in criminal or disorderly conduct while under the influence of alcohol.

The orders which can be given by the police, including the British Transport Police, and the local authorities in England and Wales could strip offenders from 2 months to 2 years from alcohol-related rights.

Anyone who violates the orders can be penalized by up to ?2,500.

"We remain concerned about the number of alcohol related incidents and the drink-fuelled violence and disorder that blight many of our towns and cities,? said James Brokenshire, the Home Office minister.

?The Government has committed to rebalancing the Licensing Act in favour of local communities, taking tough action to tackle problem premises, banning the sale of below cost alcohol and will allow local councils to charge more for late-night licences,? he added.

It's about time something like this was done. The amount of drunken ass holes that infest our towns and cities nation-wide is getting ridiculous now.

These people go out with THE INTENT to cause trouble. Ruining the good times for the majority of revellers that manage to drink without becoming violent dick heads.

Don't know about other areas but around here we have a scheme called Pub Watch. Anyone causing trouble in a bar and their details are flashed around to other bars in the area. As soon as they try to get in they get told to ~~~~ off.
It only kicks in though AFTER a person has caused trouble, but this suggestion would be better as they wouldn't even get in anywhere to cause trouble in the 1st place.

It would be a good thing but as for policing it, its a non starter.

The Isle Of Man, pop-80 thousand, has been doing this for several years now and it does keep the drunken trouble makers out of the pubs. Each pub and off licence keeps a file of banned people's id and photo for reference but the island is small and trying to do that on the scale of the uk would be near impossible.

i dont like the idea of the nanny state/big brother, but i have to admit this sounds good. people who cant hold liquor and cause trouble when they are drunk need to not drink. .
i'd be a lot happier if the publicans would do it though.
i remember years ago working in the UK seeing a ban list in a village. all the pubs had the list. seemed like an excellent idea.

Good idea as there are people out there thats idea of a night out is by causing harm and stress to others.

Although it is a good idea I will be interested to see how it works as if these idiots are banned from entering pubs or off licenses this will still not stop them getting drink from others or going in to another town were the bars do not know there faces. Also these idiots are not always caught and get away with there shocking behaviour over and over again.
