    the brummie tummy

Why folk in Brum have the biggest tums: curry capital tops European obesity league

It is widely considered the curry capital of Britain.
So perhaps it should come as no surprise that the West Midlands has been named as the fattest place in Europe.

Almost a third of adults living in and around Birmingham are obese ? twice as high as the EU average.

Nearly a third of people in the West Midlands are classed as obese

A damning report has pinpointed Britain as the ?fat man? of Europe, with a higher proportion of dangerously overweight adults than anywhere else on the continent.

The West Midlands has the highest levels of obesity in the EU at 29 per cent, closely followed by the North East at 28 per cent.
Doctors admitted they were ?appalled? and ?ashamed? by the figures and said more needed to be done to help the public slim down.

Enlarge Percentage of obese adults in the UK in 2006

Even the ?slimmest? regions of Britain have higher levels of obesity than the fattest areas in other European countries, the report found.

The South East has the lowest rates at just 18 per cent, but this is significantly higher than the worst performing region in Sweden, at 16 per cent.

The major study carried out by the Association of Public Health Observatories also revealed that the North East had the highest levels of teenage pregnancies.

Up to 2.7 per cent of all births in this region last year occurred among girls under 18, far higher than any other area in Europe, according to the survey of 27 countries.

Female cancer survival rates were also poor with the South East performing particularly badly with death rates of 185 per 100,000, compared with an EU average of 139.5 per 100,000.

Professor Steve Field of the Royal College of General Practitioners said: ?I?m appalled by the figures and feel ashamed as a GP working in the West Midlands that this area has the highest percentage of obese adults in Europe.

Obesity is a major problem and predictor of ill health throughout a patient?s life, causing serious illnesses.

?I hope we will be able to do more in the future to get people to take responsibility for their own health and take more exercise and eat sensibly.?

Barry Austin, reputed to be the fattest man in Britain, is from Solihull in the West Midlands

Professor John Wilkinson, who wrote the report, said: ?For some cases the UK is not doing very well.
?The obvious one is obesity where we are at the top of the league.

?The fine grading of the report shows that in areas where we think we are doing better in terms of obesity, such as the South East region, we are still actually far behind areas such as Scandinavia.?

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: ?The Government has made it clear that tackling health inequalities is a priority as part of its commitment to fairness and social justice.?
