imagination, which designs graphic and video chips for most of the world's handset makers, also announced a deal to bring cinema-quality 3D graphics to the next generation of mobile phones.
Hossein Yassaie, chief executive, said the $27m (?17m) acquisition of San Fransico-based Caustic Graphics would bring "Avatar-style graphics" to TVs, games consoles and mobile phones within the next few years.
"Today, 3D graphics don't look like the real thing," he said. "But Caustic's technology is different ***8211; these are photo-realistic images."
He said the technology, which has converted "ordinary PCs into super-duper ray-tracing engines" would have a similar transformational effect on mobile phones. "Once [consumers] have seen it, they will have to have it."
Mr Yassaie said that until now it has been difficult to incorporate such advanced graphics into mobiles because they drain computing and battery power. However, Caustic has developed a low power alternative.
