Microsoft to unveil new slates and Windows 8 preview at CES

Ovum analyst Richard Edwards said that ?the Cloud, new devices and apps are the three drivers that we?re likely to see from Microsoft at CES.

I?m not expecting a full version in the deep technical sense because that would break lots of existing apps, but Windows 8 is likely to contain real new features compared to Windows 7.?

Mr Edwards said that reports in the New York Times suggesting that Mr Ballmer would unveil new tablet computers from the likes of Samsung were probably accurate.

He added that ?Microsoft needs to tweak the Windows 7 experience to work better with the touch interface ? that might mean an alternative interface specifically for touch computers.

? Windows 8 itself is not due until late 2011 or early 2012.

The New York Times reported that Samsung?s new tablet PC will feature a slide-out keyboard and be approximately the same size as Apple?s iPad.

The company is reportedly encouraging partners to develop products suitable for business users and to build applications taking advantage of the latest web language, HTML5.

Mr Edwards added that ?Microsoft could also revise its cloud services. A one-click back-up to the cloud and then a restore to a rebuilt or new PC would be relatively low-hanging fruit, for instance. But will they get the kind of high status that Apple gets? I don?t really think that?s Microsoft?s business model.?
