Over a million British kids have no computer access at home

A new report reveals that over a million British school kids have no access to a computer at home, with the Department for Education refusing to comment on the findings.
With over a million UK children 'lacking access to computers' at home, the impact on their education is clear, with computers becoming an increasingly important tool for homework and working on collaborative school projects.
    Two million not online
In addition to the worryingly high number of kids that do not have access to a PC or Mac at home, nearly two million are also unable to get online at home, according to the report from the E-Learning Foundation charity.
Those children from the poorest families in the UK are two-and-a-half-times less likely to have net access at home compared with kids from families at the other end of the social spectrum.
The E-Learning Foundation has a clear objective ? to ensure every British school-age child has access to a computer with an internet connection at home.
    Poverty tech trap
The Department for Education has so far refused to comment on the latest findings.
The E-Learning Foundation's chief executive, Valerie Thompson, said: "With so many children swamped with gifts from family and friends over the Christmas period it is important we reflect on the fact that millions of children live in poverty in this country.
"For those at school, this translates into very tangible disadvantages when it comes to completing homework, researching topics, independent learning, and communicating with teachers and classmates on the school learning platform.
"Without the use of a computer and the ability to go online at home the attainment gap that characterises children from low income families is simply going to get worse."

I have four computers in my house 1 for collecting email viruses one for DK and two for the kids.

i dont want to start a war or anything ... but many that plead poverty in this country enjoy smoking, drinking and playing the lottery.. I know loads of people who say they have no cash, always manage to have a pack of 20 in their pocket and 10 lucky dips on a Saturday whilst drinking 8 cans though...

You can get a netbook for under a ?100 these days..

i cant believe that nowadays all homework is completed online,my missus kids have to have internet as they are told at school to look up such and such on the net and then complete the homework thats been given using whatever info they find,,also the younger one has a bit of an issue with spelling,,this was bought to the teachers attention at a recent open evening,,the missus was told dont worry pcs have spellcheck !! couldnt believe what i was hearing,,so if you cant afford a lappy or you live where theres no b/band how you supposed to do your homework ? only one pc at the library, and if youre spelling is shite dont worry spellcheck will rectify that
        me thinks thats fundamentally wrong

well if the school requires it then the school should fund it or provide access out of hours... as for the spelling, that's a terrible response by the school, its not up to Bill Gates to do their job

The last government told us that in 2011 all household will have fast broadband for free with Con/Lib in power now they are cutting on all expenses I doubted if it?s going to happen in the near future!

think it will happen but they will then introduce the broadband tax

Hi darwins I totally agree with you but on the election I can not see one coming for a long time if I were you I would start buying a pair of mol grips because there want be any NHS dentist for free, no broadband for free, not school dinner for free, etc, etc, etc, nothing going to be free any more.

Like opsmonkey I don't want to start shit with people, but...

Most phones can access the internet, which just about evey kid or adult will have access to. Internet access through these can be the cheapest available.... other than sharing wi-fi.... who said that, .

Orange have just offered me a free 3g dongle for ?5 per month on a rolling 30 day contract. That's a pack of 20 fags per month, not that I smoke. I don't know of a single household amongst friends & family that doesn't have at least one PC or laptop.
As it is I don't need one, my phone can be used as a dongle with free data & I have wi-fi access.

I remember, not so long ago, when parents would do anything for their kids. Guess there's some small print involving fags, alcohol & takeaway now-a-days.

Having said all that, I do think it's disgusting that teachers are promoting spell checkers rather than teaching kids how to spell. I know my spelling isn't the best in the world, but I'm usually not that far off

Mobile phones are taken off kids as they enter major exams but calculators are not.
From talking to people on the net I am amazed at how many use txt language and not because I'm a boring old fart (BOF) but I think that the 'art' of writing properly ie commas etc is being lost with this generation as is the ability to work out a math problem unaided by a calculator. (BOF rant over).

totally agree with the comments that there is to many parents out there these days to interested in buying there fags, drink, and feeding there families full of utter crap food. I am just new to the family life im 24 and my son was born there on the 18th of december and I am all for my child comes before be and my child gets what they need to get on in life and I am a firm believer of a home cooked meal (also i love the satisfaction of cooking away in the kitchen from scratch and being able to say I made that (the mrs cant cook). I think a lot of my generation is to be honest a disgrace, your children come first and whats best for them.

Also come on there is other ways of researching theres books and theres plenty of them from the library and if theres a book that isnt there they can get it in for you. Computer work can be covered inside school so that if there are children in the class that dont have any means of access then they are not going to miss out.

I am very surprised that the number is so high as every household i know and can think of has a computer, with exception to maybe some of the elderly.

I also agree that so many children have mobiles that they can research on and also in this day and age of netbooks and dongles (theres even top up dongles) that even families with a low and tight income could push to these needs for there children.

                          Rant over

Sorry and also schools should be providing the material needed to research for the children's education. We pay taxes for education and then the schools are saying 'go home and go online and get what you need'.

Well you might not agree with me but let me put it this way, the only way forward for this country as I can see now is another General Election, and we want the government to take over the bank business and oil business, Gas, Elec, Etc, just like the old days rather then feeding fat cats and milking our money on a program called bonuses pay.
