SONY is planning to take on Apple - by launching a PlayStation on a mobile phone.

The gaming giant is tipped to unveil the PlayStation Portable (PSP) smartphone in the New Year.

The move would put the Japanese giant head-to-head with Apple, the US titan behind the iconic iPhone. And it could be a huge hit with the lucrative teen market.

he new phone would mirror Sony's hand-held PSP games console which allows people to watch movies, surf the net, play music and read e-books.

Leaked photos of the phone show a control pad for playing games slides out of the mobile handset - giving it the look of the hand-held console.

One industry insider said: "If Sony can nail this they could be on to a winner." The PSP phone is expected to be launched in the US and Europe in spring. Sony would not comment.
