    the ?3 pint

Pull the other one ... even costlier pints

A PINT at the pub will bust the THREE QUID mark today - sparking fury among landlords over the 2.5 per cent rise in VAT.

Drinks trade experts warned the hike will lead to 8,800 job losses - with more to come when beer duty rises by another 5p in March.

The British Beer and Pub Association said of drinkers having to pay a sobering ?3.06 for the average pint: "It's another tax blow for the industry."

    Blast ... Ed Miliband

Chief executive Brigid Simmonds said beer duty had risen by 26 per cent in the past two years - forcing thousands of pubs to the wall when they could have been CREATING jobs.

She warned: "The Treasury is piling tax on top of tax."
The VAT rise - from 17.5 per cent to 20 - will slap more than 6p on a pint as pubs reel from a slump in beer sales from over 14.4 million pints a day in 2007 to just 11.4million last year.

The tax whammy will also see petrol and diesel costing around 3.5p a litre more, once the fuel duty increase that came in on January 1 is factored in.

Yesterday queues built up at filling stations nationwide as motorists flocked to fill their tanks.

Shops urging consumers to beat the VAT rise were packed.

Chancellor George Osborne blamed massive debts left by Labour for forcing the Coalition to jack up the tax.

He said: "VAT is a powerful weapon to tackle debt and if we don't use it then the spending cuts would be over ?13billion bigger."

Labour leader Ed Miliband accused the Tories and Lib Dems of a "broken promise" to peg petrol prices.

He said: "Fuel prices are now at a record high.

"And what is this Conservative-led government doing? They are putting up the duty."

Frantic shopper Abi Tucker, 22, from Kent, said in London's Oxford Street yesterday: "I made sure I got my DVD player and an MP3 player."

And they wonder why more and more people are buying the cheap supermarket beer deals.

The people in this country are only going to put up with it for so long before they start voting with their feet. This will be a death knell for a lot of pubs.

they all put the price of grog up at every given opportunity, its the same with nicotene, they know people wont stop, well most anyway and its a great revenue earner,i just joined my local ex-servicemans club, cost me a score a year in subs and a pint of guiness is ?2.70,thats at least 50p cheaper than anywhere else where i live
if i took the misses out to a pub, normally a glass of vino and a pint,i wouldnt get much change from a tenner,,daylight ~~~~in robbery
on the flip side before these mugs got into office,my mate ran a boozer,,quite a big place in east london,he told me that there is absolutely no incentive to sell more beer,as the more they sell the more money the brewery take,,you only get your set wage, they take the rest so its not really a job people want when theres no incentive to make more profit,,labour were doing the same as these mugs, theres no difference in both parties, its an illusion

Bloody disgrace they wont be happy until the only pubs left here are the big chains ooh and then theres the supermarket carry outs.

There destroying so many local pubs, family run pubs, pubs with a great atmosphere and friendly faces. When you look at most witherspoons yes there cheap but where is the atmosphere, where is the decent blever with the person working behind the bar it isnt to be seen. Also local pubs with home cooked decent grub, your chains most of the crap comes in packets for the microwave or pre-made trays ready to be stuck in the oven with no care or anything going in to the food.

Our government is a complete and utter joke and they totally disgust me.

Say what you want about Gordon Brown but he was a fall guy but had some decent ideas behind him that wouldnt see us in road the these 2 tools are taking us down

the nearest pub to me now is 2? miles away, and I live in a city, not a small village,
the last 2 pubs went a couple of months ago, one got demolished for a block of flats, and the other one is now a tesco express.
who needs a recession when you've got government policy that will destroy an industry, excessive tax and the smoking ban,
the last one will be a change in the age limit to 21, that should finish off a lot of city center pubs
If I could I would leave this over priced over governed aspiring middle class shit hole of a country

2 and a half miles thats shocking, thats acceptable when you stay out in the middle of nowhere but a city. feel for you bud.

the age limit going up is coming it is only a matter of time.

i was in the supermarket and i got asked what my date of birth was, gave the cashier it then got asked if i had ID to which i replied no and i was told that i need to look 25 or over and if not i would need ID. im 24 i certainly look my age. yet more and more supermarkets, shops and pubs are being urged to use this method.

I was a bar man for awhile and whats needed is good judgement not silly rules like that.

Booze sales from supermarkets is our youngster?s beginners to start drinking because I have noticed over and over young lads as young as 15 year old taking booze from self service machines after midnight when the staff are not looking, the self service should be closed after midnight to avoid young children?s from drinking.

Not a chance . Most people in this country don't have the backbone and just moan and moan and accept whatever shite is thrown at them.

A perfect example is the fuel price protest of 2000 ( remember that ). That started when prices reached the heady heights of 82 pence a litre. Today it's over 130 pence a litre. That protest if carried on for a further 72 hours would have brought the government of the times to it's knees and prevented a lot of the current crap happening, but people got fed up with it and gave in once the government bleated about people dying in hospitals etc etc. That and the alledged bribes of political jobs given to the leaders ( Mr Williams) who is still in politics today more than 10 years later.

Pubs have been closing for years and will for years to come. Untill such a time as like the Supermarkets only a handful of big chains remain.
People only have themselves to blame. No matter how much people moan and moan about the loss of their local,I bet the vast majority would still drink in places like Wetherspoons who flog cheaper drinks. Bit like moaning about your local shop closing and doing your weekly shop at Asda or Tesco.

It's human nature to go where is cheapest but at what price?

The one exception that I can see to going where is cheapest is Petrol stations.

How many times have you seen 2 garages close to each other with one maybe 1 to 2 pence a litre cheaper? I bet that there is still quite a few cars in the more expensive one. Never could understand that. If the more expensive garage had fewer/no customers then maybe they would lower their prices.

                          Nowt as strange as folk.
