Football: Uefa hand out first financial fair play penalties

Uefa has imposed its first financial fair play sanctions by temporarily withholding prize money from 23 clubs for failing to comply with the rules.

The clubs face further investigation from European football's governing body for having overdue payments to other clubs, employees or tax authorities.

Atletico Madrid and Malaga of Spain, Portugal's Sporting and Fenerbahce of Turkey are among those under scrutiny.

Uefa introduced the rules to force clubs to operate within their means.

The 23 clubs have been given a deadline of 30 September to prove that their finances are in order.

Teams playing in all Uefa club competitions have been monitored since the start of the 2011/12 season.

The are tasked with breaking even in 2012 and 2013 and being assessed during the 2013/14 season.

Its good to see clubs getting punished but I do hope none go out of business as a result.

This rules a joke they know the bigger clubs can manipulate the budgets (man city did it with so called sponsor) and how is just stopping prize money a punishment it should be you don't meet the money rule you can't be in the competition.
