Tevez claims he stayed home to look after his daughter Florencia, 4, who had a high temperature.
Neither players nor officials were aware of this ? and most saw it as another sign the player is on his way.
He has made up his mind to go, believing he is not fully appreciated at United and is behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov in the pecking order.
United were still planning to negotiate a fee for the player to make his loan move permanent.
But they are unwilling to pay his agent and co- owner Kia Joorabchian the ?26million asking price and will only go to ?18m.
Tevez and Joorabchian feel they have been messed about and strung along by United.
They thought they had a deal that the ?6million loan fee for the last two seasons would be followed by a further ?26million.
Now free agent Tevez is set to join United?s fiercest rivals Liverpool ? and there will be nothing Ferguson can do about it.
