Chelsea and Rangers Storm To Cup Victories

Chelsea and Rangers stormed to Cup success in the FA and Scottish finals.

Guus Hiddink was handed the FA Cup as a going-away present as Chelsea recovered from conceding the fastest goal in final history to beat Everton.

Fans' favourite Nacho Novo fired Rangers to a domestic double with the winner in the Homecoming Scottish Cup final against Falkirk.

The contest at Wembley was less than half a minute old when Louis Saha found the net for the Toffeemen.

It was to be a high point for Everton though as Didier Drogba levelled before Frank Lampard's 20-yard strike just evaded the despairing dive of Tim Howard 18 minutes from time.

Lampard said that his trbute when he scored was for his mother, who died last year.

"We showed a lot of character and dominated the match after half-time," said Lampard.

Ashley Cole became the first player since the 19th century to collect five winners' medals.

And the victory, Chelsea's second in three years at the new Wembley, is a reminder of the stability Hiddink has brought to Stamford Bridge since replacing the hapless Luiz Felipe Scolari.

After a pair of tepid semi-finals, the Wembley authorities changed the pitch and their groundsman in the hope of getting something better in place for their showpiece occasion.

In Scotland the diminutive striker Nacho Novo heaped more Hampden heartache on the Bairns months after his double sent them crashing out of the League Cup.

He netted his ninth goal of the season to help Rangers claim the trophy for the 33rd time.

The narrow defeat was a bitter pill for Falkirk to swallow after waiting 12 years for another crack at the silverware they last won back in 1957.
