Stoke City FC (The new era of Carpet Ball)

    Hello,
I know I'm new but I better disclose something I'm sure you'll find troubling (especially if you're an Arsenal fan )... yes, I am a Stoke City FC fan Guessing I'm probably the first on here seeing as I couldn't find a thread about them!

I'm a season ticket holder in the mighty Boothen End and go to as many away games as possible... which unfortunately was zero last year but that was the first season I wasn't able to make any.

Anyway, we've had a change of manager, which was met with 50/50 responses. Some feel Pulis was treated badly in the way he was let go. Others feel it was necessary if the club was ever going to move on. Sparky is now boss and while I was very unhappy about that originally, there's no point in giving him stick before he's had chance to prove himself so he's on probation so to speak.

This weekend, we had our first home pre-season friendly against Serie A team Genoa. I wouldn't usually go to the pre-season friendlies as they're usually against Newcastle Town or Stafford Rangers and are a bit mickey mouse, but with Genoa being rather better than that, I decided I wanted to be there to see this new era of carpet ball. Yes people, you will be amazed. It was like watching a totally different team. No hoof ball at all. Not a single one. All game. There were probably more passes in the game against Genoa than the whole of last season haha. I have to be honest, we looked rather good doing it to. We're not quite Barcelona, but unlike West Brom who played 1 touch passing football without ever making a chance, we actually did look like we could score... bringing me onto the next issue: We desperately need a new striker, because we did make a couple of chances and didn't take them. Walters had a glorious opportunity but instead of finishing it with a coolness of a good striker, he smashed it as hard as he could straight at the keeper (Who probably didn't know what hit him) like a poor Championship player lacking the composure required to make it in the Prem.

Ultimately, Genoa was just a friendly and not a true representation of how it's going to be. The Brit only had a few thousand in (two stands were closed) so the atmosphere that often carries us over the line wasn't there. The game finished 0-0 which was probably a fair result, if perhaps we shaded it a little... We did have all the possession, something I've never said for Stoke but I wouldn't say we dominated quite as much as Sky Sports suggested in their report. The players all looked a bit tired after 75 minutes as well, so I think this week it's going to be extra sessions round the pitch.

So, let's all talk about Stoke City the oldest football club in the Premiership and the second oldest in professional football

    Vis Unita Fortior!

Welcome aboard mate, there is at least one Stoke fan on the forum but at the minute i cant think who

Personally i quite liked Stoke and Pulis and thought they did a great job staying in the PL and Pulis made them a permanent fixture

I know a few lads were not happy with him but i thirnk he was a victim of his own success, its not like your going to get top 4, unless you get some rich shieks and call your ground abu dabi Brittania Quatar Kuwait Stadium

Fans now not happy with staying in PL and survival, want to challenge and play pretty football

TBh i didnt think you were ever that bad yes it was a bit up in the air and shrunken pitches but you have people who can play and mix it and on your day you could beat anyone, which is what i liked reminded me of Wimbledon, who i miss tbh i think the league needs the odd team like that

Lets hope it doesnt end like Wimbledon and sparky does ok, but Sparkeys teams are usually bottom of the fair play league so maybe you will keep a bit of whats got you this far

      Good luck

No idea what's happening with the pitch. I always liked our style. It was never pretty, but that's what made us different. We'll see how this new style forms, but I'm waiting to see what these chancers for pundits say. Probably "they're still a hoofball team, but now they pass" or some biased drivel.

You dont stay in the PL for a few years if you cant play a bit too

btw when i mentioned pitch i just mean Pulis shrunk it ( not sure if we have crossed wires), i will miss his team tbh in PL

No I know what you meant about the pitch I think it was the smallest in the Prem. I'm a season ticket holder and I have to admit it is noticeably smaller than other grounds such as Villa's etc. It'll depend how Sparky wants us to play though. He may feel the long ball is a useful secondary tactic. We're a big team after all.
