Kevin Keegan has been awarded ?2 million damages today plus interest after winning his case for constructive dismissal against Newcastle United.

The case, relating to his somewhat controversial departure from St James' Park in 2008, was heard by an independent arbitration panel convened by the Premier League.

Keegan left the Toon only eight months into his second spell in charge of the club following a dispute with owner Mike Ashley over transfer policy.

The former England manager was reported to be livid over the way in which transfer business was conducted at St James' Park, with people other than he seemingly having the final say over signing players.

The matter reportedly came to a head over the signing of Ignacio Gonzalez, according to the Premier League's official website, with then-director of football Dennis Wise telling Keegan to sign the player having only seen footage of him on You Tube.

Keegan's case was based on the claim that he not only lost his salary, but also other benefits adding up to somewhere in the region of ?8 million. He also claimed for 'stigma damages' based on the harm done to his reputation as a manager, making it less likely that he would find work elsewhere.

"I am delighted that the Premier League Manager's Arbitration Tribunal has today formally announced that it has upheld my claim for wrongful dismissal against Newcastle United," Keegan said, according to The Guardian.

"I took the decision to resign in September 2008 only after very careful and anxious consideration. The decision to resign was one of the most difficult that I have ever had to take in my life.

"I believe that anybody who knows me and my attachment to Newcastle United and the North-east in general will understand how difficult this must have been. I very much hope that the decision of the tribunal now confirms why I felt that I had no option but to resign from the position as manager of the club that I love."

TBH i think the Newcastle fans would have liked to see Keegan get the ?25 million just to stick it up Mike Ashley, as its him that's got the club in this hole..

No. The biggest problem at Newcastle United are their deluded fans.

                  Ahh c'mon man that's a bit harsh,
If fact i'd safely say Newcastle's biggest asset is their fans.

asset in terms of generating money maybe, but in footballing terms they place unrealistic expectations on the team. They have it in their head that they're a big club who should be challenging for the league. They seem to be hanging on to past glories, but then you have to ask what glory? They haven't won anything for 50 years!

Newcastle fans harp on about how nobody understands their special club. Well I do. They expect Geordie owner, Geordie manager and Geordie players and they harp on about how they're s special club and they're special fans. Everybody considers their club special, but don't tell me they love their club any more than Man United, or any more than my brother loves Stockport County, or anyone else loves their club, because they don't. That is Newcastle's downfall and until they get away from this mentality and give their managers a chance they will go nowhere.

As far as I am concerned they got the owner they deserve.

Think most of them would still have him back. He was called a liar and set out to prove a point which I think he's done now. He'd never have gone back in the first place if he'd believed that he had no say in the buying and selling of players.

Yep. None of them realise that the ?2m will come from them as it'll be added onto the price of the club.

Actualy i'm nowhere near deluded, there is nothing wrong with wanting your club to do well and considering the amount of money spent on good and moreso bad players; owen as an example who done jack shit; we all have expectations even if they are a little grand.
We never asked for ashley to buy the club he done that himself, we never asked for dennis wise he done that aswell; and ashleys biggest **** up was trying to please the fans with getting keegan then shearer instead of concentrating on making the club and team better with a decent manager.
And as it stands the manager of any club should have the sole right to buy and sell players after all it is he who makes or breaks the winning not the upper level of management, as for keegan walking because of that well i'm split between being disapointed he walked out instead of giving it a go and i'm glad he got paid 2 mil which proves a point he was right.
I think newcastles biggest problem is as ruudvandan put it they expect too much but not from the players they are after all paid to do a job they dont do, it's with the manager and expecting him to just suddenly fly us up to the top within an unrealistic time.
Sam allardyce should have been given the chance to run the place for a far longer time to enable him to assess the team available which is now why we have no takers for management as who the wants to take a job that is always so short lived.
Its a pity these so called die hard toon fans that whinge so much didn't have the same view as me and let the managers have a go on longer basis whether we win or not; Alex ferguson is a classic example.
Personaly i didn't care much for keegan being manager that was a one off, nor do i care for shearer being manager, and tbh i havn't a clue who i would like as at the moment i am just rolling along waiting to see what will happen to the club long term then we might get into a position of a decent enough manager to be keen enough to give it a try.

my thoughts exactley, it was disgracefull the way he was treated by fat ashley who hasnt a clue how to run a football club, hence the mess you lot are in. ashley should have stuck with selling trainers imo. p.s. long may it continue as sunderland climb the league!
