TV blackout for England v Ukraine game but fans can watch it live on the internet

Millions of England fans will be unable to watch this weekend's World Cup qualifying match on TV after negotiations collapsed.
However they will, in a football first, be able to see it on their computers.
The match is to be streamed live via the internet in a ?4.99 pay-per-view set up. In another first, fans will be able to watch it at selected cinemas.
The shift comes after sports channel Setanta collapsed as it had been due to broadcast the game. After its demise, the Ukrainian FA appointed Swiss-based firm Kentaro to sell the TV rights. However it failed to agree offers with any traditional broadcasters such as BBC, ITV and Five.

Yours for ?4.99: www.ukrainevengland.com will host the first ever exclusive internet stream of an England game

It will now be streamed live over the internet by media group Perform. The company's executive chairman, Andrew Croker said: ?The world is changing...this is a classic example of it.
?It?s exciting. Anyone who wants to come on a journey with us should sign up - they will enjoy it.?
Perform said it streams more than 15,000 events a year, with millions of site users a month.
England have already qualified for the 2010 World Cup, winning all eight of their group matches.
Peter Silverstone, managing director of Kentaro, told the BBC that a maximum of one million subscribers would be taken for the match.
This is the ?safe number to stop at to ensure the optimal broadcast?, he said.
Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson will be part of the studio line-up, he added, with a ?top commentary team?.
Mr Silverstone said: ?You will watch as you would any other streaming on the internet, like YouTube or the BBC iPlayer - there will be a pop-up player that will show the match in a very good quality stream.
Last time: Now when England play Ukraine you will only be able to watch online

?We have a huge marketing effort behind us with the various newspaper groups that will promote the match on their websites.
?Commercially this will work and genuinely offers an exciting opportunity for us. We wouldn?t embark on this project if we didn?t feel it had strategic long-term value, this isn?t a one-off shot.?
Football Association spokesman Adrian Bevington told the broadcaster that his organisation ?would obviously like to see the game broadcast to as many people as possible?.

?These are the rights of the Ukrainian FA and the agents they?ve appointed to sell them,? he said.
?A traditional TV platform would be ideal to broadcast the game but it?s not the case. It?s not in our control.?
    * You can watch England's clash with Ukraine LIVE on MailOnline.

The match will feature the usual pre-match interviews and lowdown, with former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson part of the pundits' panel.

The game is available to buy for just ?4.99 but the offer ends at 11.59pm on Wednesday. Term and conditions apply.

Ok so lets get ahead of the game here.. we are gonna be flooded with requests for info about download streams for this match.. If anybody can say with some surety that it will on a certain stream then we can start a new thread for it and any other tips on available streams can be added to that thread..

we can leave this thread for slagging off the policy of only having it only streamed and not on Live TV etc..

Can't say i'll be watching it myself either but plenty of others will want to and its forums like this that will be getting asked for streams... So putting my own feelings toward the match aside i just want to be ready for the questions when they arise.. it will make our lives a little easier on the day if we know where to direct such questions..

As a license fee payer, I for one do not want the BBC gettinng ripped off into paying over the odds for pointless matches. If the company selling it got what it considers a reasonable offer for a qualifying game then they'd have taken it.

The trouble is, with England having aalready qualified, the TV companies willl only pay the going rate for friendlies because as far as England are concerned that is all this is.

IMO hardly anybody will go to the troublle of paying a fiver for what is effectively a friendly and the broadcasters are going to get their fingers burned. They would have been better off just cutting their losses and accepting a friendly-rate offer.

Let me think about this for a minute.

Choice 1: Game on big wide screens + loud multi speakers in a pub with all your mates. Cost free

Choice 2: huddled around a laptopwith a pop up streaming window that spends most of the time "buffering" at ?11.99

The future is here but I can't quite make up my mind which I prefer

Didn't Ukraine FA hold out for last minute deal after Satanta went down hoping it would be a crunch game and they could ask for more money. When it turned into a nothing game they were caught out and no-one would pay them as much. Or is that just another internet rumour

                    Anyway
the media coverage was I read earlier 250,000 subscriptions to the feed. Using their figures of 1 subscription equals 2 viewers thats 500,000 who couldn't tell who was on the pitch.

No, the Ukraine FA sold the rights to Kentaro ages ago. Kentaro sold them on to Setanta. Setanta went bust so Kentaro had to recoup their money. Unfortunately for Kentaro the timing couldn't have been worse, as England were on the verge of qualifying, therefore the TV companies were holding out not wanting to pay top dollar for a game that would have been essentially a friendly. England qualified, and the British TV companies would pay qualifying game rates, which Kentaro wanted.

The rumour is that they did a deal with the BBC to show highlights a week ago, but the beeb weren't allowed to announce it until after the game, so it wouldn't harm Kentaro's subscriptions. Check your TV guide for BBC1 and you'll see that in the highlights' place is one of them "best of" programmes that shows clips. Hardly a suitable programme for a primetime slot on the BBC's flagship channel.
