Seeing the ways Spurs ripped wigan apart and the way he put the goals away.
I thing Harry might be right.
Some goals they were. The passing from midfield was amazing and his awareness to not being played offside etc was superb. Right place right time everytime.
Excellent game to watch.sigpic

On the evidence of that game not to mention his general form this season, Defoe has to be starting games for England at the World Cup. The one criticism of Defoe which I always had was that he is a greedy player, meaning he'd always go for goal when he had no chance of scoring instead of simply playing in a teammate when he was in a much better position - but when Defoe is being played off the shoulder of the defender he is lethal! And he's in form. That's why he has to be starting, if of course, the England team is picked on merrit as opposed to names. In fact that trio of Lennon, Crouch and Defoe should be starting the World Cup based on the evidence of that last match - but we all know 1 match doesn't make a season as it were, but Defoe at least has to be starting given the form and ability he's been showing - a pacey player who can finish, how can he not be starting ?!Comment

Not saying he's the best player in the Prem or that other player's record history isn't better. But I am saying on current form he should be starting games for England, and the fact is he should be, because neither Owen or Rooney are doing sod all - in fact Defoe is the top scorer in the Premiership right now full stop, scoring more goals at this point than your Rooney or your Drogba or your Torres.
Now I'm not the biggest Defoe fan, in fact I'm one of his harshest critics, but even I can see when he's playing well enough to be spearheading England's strikeforce, anyone that suggests otherwise right now needs their head examining because Defoe is the league's top scorer at the moment and that tells it's own little story.....any national team that's worth anything should be picked based on current form over name value.Last edited by Raven; 24 November, 2009, 21:20.Comment

Actually I think Tottenham's buildup play/service to strikers is every bit as good as the Chelsea's and the Man U's at least on form this season. You don't score 7 or 8 goals in one half of football if you can't ping the ball around the pitch to a very good standard. Though I agree somewhat with this statement since most players typically suddenly get a buy into the England side as soon as they pull on a Manchester United shirt, just look at Alan Smith at one stage - he started getting picked regularly when playing for Man U simply for the fact that he was playing for Man U despite being largely ignored in spite of showing better form and more desire and aggression at Leeds when we were regularly in the top 4 in the Premiership. Now I know people will attempt to counter this by mentioning Michael Owen's current situation regarding club and country - but that's why I said most players and typically, based on history. Which is what happened, a player goes to Man United and suddenly his appearances in an England jersey suddenly double overnight.
To some extent you can apply this to every player there's ever been in world football, not least of which Michael Owen, who isn't the player he used to be because of age and injury. Same to some extent with Henry too. In that sense class is temporary as well. Because all players lose pace as they get older which means they aren't as good as they once were.
But what does any of it matter ? Defoe is having the best season of his career by the looks of things and on the form he's showing he should be starting for England, and if he carries this form on for the rest of the season then he should be starting at the World Cup - I don't see what's so difficult to understand, and I don't see why you're having a jibe at Defoe's ability when he's the current top scorer in the Premiership, it does make you look a little silly. Are you an Arsenal fan by any chance ? Because I'm neutral.
Nobody has said Defoe is the best striker in the world, not even Harry Redknapp said this, Redknapp actually said, as am I, that Defoe is the best striker in the Premiership right now, and the top goalscorers chart doesn't lie - Defoe has scored more goals in the Premiership this season than any other striker, which makes him the best around at the moment. Which in turn means he should be starting for England at the moment, which also means if the World Cup were to start tomorrow, or if Defoe is in the same form come the end of the season, then Defoe should be starting games in South Africa when the World Cup commences. This much is fact I feel. But Capello is smart enough of a manager to know all this already, not like that tit McLaren who was Mr Burn's right hand man. And when I say Mr Burns I don't mean DF
. Although I think Devilfish could have done a much better job.....
