    News - Wayne Rooney

You must be delighted to have signed a new extended deal at Manchester United?
Yes I?m very happy to have signed a new long-term contract with Manchester United. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world and to know that I will be playing here for the majority of my career is something that I?m looking forward to. I?m happy that everything is now finalised and I can carry on concentrating on my football.
This new contract will see you staying at the club over 10 years, did you ever think that when you first signed you would be there so long?
I didn?t really know what was going to happen and wasn?t something that I really thought about at the time, I was just happy to have joined a massive club like Manchester United. The more I think about it 10 years is a long time, but when you?re enjoying your football at one of the biggest clubs in the world and are comfortable there then that?s what happens, we have seen this with the likes of Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand.

Some people will be surprised you signed a new contract due to the possibility that the club will not be in the Champions league next season, was this a factor?
I know that?s what some of the press thought but it?s not a massive concern for me. This is because I know the direction that this club is going in, and if we don?t make it this season then we will come back stronger and claim a Champions League spot next season. Let?s not forget we still have a chance this year, some of the other teams are playing well but we have a strong squad here and if we have a positive end to the season then who knows what can happen.

You have signed for a further 5 and a half years, does that mean you will stay at the club for virtually your entire top-flight career?
Yes, I?ve been here since I was 18 and this contract will take me through to my thirties, which is almost my entire professional career. I?ve played most of my best football here and am looking forward to hopefully playing even better football in the next few years. I?ve had a lot of special moments and hope there are many more to come.

You are currently 4th on the all time leading goal scoring record, this contract gives you the chance to pass Sir Bobby Charlton?s record of 249, was that something that you focused on when deciding to stay?
No it wasn?t a factor in my decision to stay, but I do realize that this contract gives me the opportunity to achieve it. This is definitely something I would like to achieve and do think about more, if I managed to do it it?d be something I?d be very proud of. My aim is always to score and create as many goals as possible, so if I can continue to score regularly and break the record then I would be delighted.

Signing for Manchester United is a big statement of intent from the club about maintaining its status as one of world footballs leading clubs, how do you see the future for Manchester United?
The future is bright for Manchester United, this is still one of the worlds leading clubs, we have seen this with the signing of Juan Mata in January. People have been saying that we may have trouble attracting the world?s best players but I think the fact Mata came here shows this isn?t true. This is a new era for the club, we have a new management team and a great new manager in David Moyes, there has to be some time for change. We have some great players here and despite our recent form everyone has stuck together and the team spirit is still good, we will continue to work hard and get Manchester United to the top where it belongs.

Negotiations have obviously taken some time to complete and there have been lots of media speculation to what was going on, how do you feel talks went?
Well if you believe everything you read in the papers that?s because I have been demanding to be captain and want an input into the Club?s transfer policy (laughs) which is totally laughable and of course untrue. The talks have taken a while but that?s not unusual, it?s been a difficult time for the club and there has been a lot going on but the talks were positive from the start. There was great belief in me from David Moyes, Ed Woodward and the board, and also the Glazers, this made my decision a lot easier and I would like to thank them for that. My teammates also played a big part in my decision, I?d like to thank them for their support and look forward to working with them. Most importantly the fans have always supported me since I joined the club, through the good times and the bad times. They continued this support whilst the talks have been going on and I can?t thank them enough.

Do you have any message for the fans?
I?d just like to thank them for all their support since I joined the club and want to let them know that I appreciate it, I?m very happy to have signed a new contract and I?m looking forward to sharing many more special moments with them.

Your saying get rid of DM and keep the team we have, no m8 the team do know what they are doing cos they been doing it since the start of the season now if your calling for DM head you should also be calling for at least half the team we watched tonight.

It starts from the top mate. And nobody is interested in playing for DM. Did you see carricks's interview. .. He stopped short of saying DM should go when asked the question.

This is not as bad as everyone is making out to be. Won the league easily. How many players did Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea buy at the start of the season? Hey we have been shooot all season. And a dudie hard evertonian said to me he is real crap and he won't last a season because he has no tactics to change anything. After The Fulham game I just can't sporty him anymore. That really showed his lack of anything to be in charge of such a big team.

And let's be honest, what credential did he have to get the job?

All he knows is to stop the other team playing and nick a goal and hold on. ... But United are attack attack always. ... Have to say. ... Liverpool are the team to watch right now because of the way they pay. .. attack attack. .. How we used to be

Been watching from pre season and nothing has changed. ... boring shite tactics of let's pass side ways or backwards as first choice

            First Q ask fergi
second Q our defenders don't know how to hold on to a one goal lead
And if you believe carrick that says it all.

You have to question DM'S judgement when he continues to pick Ferdinand, especaially after a midweek game, slow is not the word (though not as bad as the totally useless Fellaini) he can only pass the ball sideways or backwards and his long balls invariably end up with the opposition. He is now that bad it is embarrasing. and only defender that wants to play is leaving. The whole team should have been made to sit down and watch Barcalona- "right lads, this is how you pass the ball" They came out at half time with the same lackadaisical attitude, you wonder what Moyles said, obviously no hairdryer. No passion, no ideas, no chance. I have never seen Roy Keane so animated, he is right six players at least need to go, and then build up from youth. Anybody know why he wont start Hernadez?

ask fergie? I have my views on that one

Or defenders are actually quiet good at holding on add we do quiet well when we get the first goal. ... alas we very rarely score the first goal. We concede first and that's the end of the game as we don't know how to score goals anymore (DM trademark)

The first three i'd like to see leave at the end of the season. Agree totally Mikk on ferdinand he's well past his sell by date

Too true i cant believe how many people are now saying its because fergie left an ageing squad what a ****in crock champions one minute then 4 months later they all past it?? whatever

the players bar rooney are not playing for Moyes and his coaching staff and i believe it all stems from a kind of what do they know attitude at the end of the day they won jack. Players join utd and think wow these guys have done it all i can learn a lot they now have the polar opposite and think i have won it all what can i learn off moyes, round and phil neville

Biggest mistake ever getting rid of phelan and melunsteen it would have made the transition so much smoother but i think moyes didnt have the balls to go on his own and took his comfort blankets with him. There has been numerous rumours about stone age training methods and personally i dont think he knows his own mind he seems overawed by united and has been forced to change his footballing beliefs to fit with united through fear

the van persie was not fit incident but i didn't dare bring him off as id of been slaughtered sums his time at united up, he is too keen to please the boots are too big to fill by him and he does not have a clue in utilizing the players, he trys the united way but does not know how he is predictable and uninspiring the subs he makes change nothing, there is no tempo its all sideways and back and he clearly does not know how to get in behind teams and get them moving backwards, its all back and side and boot it in the box only evra seems to manage to get defenders running towards their own goal.I think 11 years at everton playing the opposite way has left moyes totally incapable of change

It seems like they need to go out of the way to prove points rooneys deal too much, and mata to be fair good as he is, is not really needed. We seem to have a situation where rooney and RVP cannot play together, we keep playing young, we let zaha go out without giving him a chance when our crosses from wide are the worst they have ever been and how do you solve a problem like kagawa best player in best league the bundesliga yet we dont know how to play him

So we then have 2 similar players mata and kagawa who both like to play off the striker yet seem to play wide, and 2 strikers who seem to like the same areas, hernandez who cant get a look in, januzaj on the right more often than left, to be fair its not all down to the midfielders going backwards and sideways the runs are just not there most of the time due to the above issues, the team is lost too many names

whether it be mata/rvp rooney/kagawa or vice versa i think unless moyes solves a way to play instead of accomodating and not upsetting anyone the team will continue to struggle the team has no balance

Looked a lot better today, it was probably Fellainis best game in a utd shirt and we actually looked a bit dangerous and got behind their lines a few times. Yes it was West Brom but they beat us at home and when i found out they had not beat us at the Hawthorns for 30 years or so i thought here we go again another milestone for Moyes

RVP and Rooney seemed to have swapped, Rooney had the hump last year looks like RVP has it now, they cannot seem to fully integrate together its either one is on form and one is not it seems. Rooney just signed his bumper deal so maybe close season RVP will be gone

Maybe its for the best we seem to have too many players playing behind the RVP, Mata and Kagawa seem to prefer it but Rooney will always play so they cant. So if Rooney just signed a new deal so maybe the next season will bring mata/kagawa behind rooney

At least thats how i think its starting too look

Yes, it was only West brom.... Who are sinking like a ton of bricks. Saying that, I watched Chelsea playing there couple of weeks ago and they were lucky to escape with a draw. Sadly I think rvp is pretty much gone. He ain't happy at all!!... Maybe back to Arsenal.

If he does go then we have to splash the cash and get a proper striker. ... Rooney just ain't that.

We seem to be keeping clean sheets again. .. bonus. ... Let's see how we do against shitehhh

There's some bollox talked in this thread, ********(oops cant say phelaytio here?) has got to be the worst signing in United's history, he walks around the midfieild like he's been there for many glorious years (bit like Cantona used to do but he earned it), he cannot pass the ball more than 6 feet without it going to the opposition, you can see he is afraid, hence the short passes, he can't tackle, he should be useful in the air with his height but he wont or doesnt want to challenge for anything in the air- it is like Utd playing with 10 men when he starts, and the inference that it will be no big deal if RVP goes-the man that won us the title last year! Nobody can fault Rooney's work rate but he blows hot and cold with long goal droughts, Mata has yet to prove himself and kagawa has never fulfilled the promise, unlike the the classy RVP who fit right in last year. Without injury and confidence he is natural goal scorer, it would be a massive blow is he leaves (memories of Van Nistleroy). I've stopped watching MUTV because of their sycophantic rose tinted views, there are serious problems with this team and beating the worst team in the premiership changes nothing. I dare'nt watch the Liverpool game.

"Fellaini was the pre-eminent figure. He had the most touches (98) and made the most passes (71) of anyone on the pitch. He was everywhere, covering 12.04km according to the Premier League tracking data. Again, that was more than anyone on either side."

Fellaini reminder | Football News | Sky Sports

I think those niggling wrist and back injuries had him a yard off the pace forcing him to foul a lot, he was good against palace and outstanding yesterday, its encouraging, helps Moyes too as the signing has been heavily criticised.

I agree with almost everything you said and fellaini does look nervous and has been poor at best but he did have by far his best game

But i assume your talking about my comment when you mention it will be no big deal if RVP left

If so your putting words in my mouth

But Rooney just signed a bumper new deal and a happy rooney seems to make an unhappy van persie and last season we had a happy RVP and an unhappy Rooney

We won the league with an unhappy rooney, Moyes has made Rooney happy and more free in games this season this has effected van persie and he is right they seem to get in each others way now

My inference was more an observation and an educated guess as to what happens in the future, Rooneys new deal means he will be going nowhere. Ferguson put Rooneys nose out of joint for the good of the team, Moyes is not strong enough so tries to please both and its not really worked

So with Rooney going nowhere i see RVP as the logical choice to go and yes i am not rooneys greatest fan but i would rather have 2 players really gelling up top than 2 who seem too struggle together a lot of the time. Team has to come first and unless moyes can get them in tandem very soon i see a mata & rooney combo for next season
