The premier league are considering a proposal to introduce a play-off for the fourth champions league spot. Now it has being proposed that only the first three be decided on league positions and the fourth place be determined by a play -off. That could mean the teams finishing in the fourth to seventh positions playing a mini knockout. Such amove would be seen as a measure to injectmore competition into the league. Good idea or bad.

Yes, but this is just proposal. The next three years will be just the same even if they accept it. For that you also need vote 14 of 20 premier league clubs. I don't like this idea cause I think that in play off clubs would not have the same treatmant by judges. -
dont agree its bad enough havin 2,3,&4 in the champions league without a team finishing 7th havin a chance that would make the champios league an even bigger farce...Comment

The playoffs were introduced in the 2nd, 3rd & 4th divisions (as they were then known) to increase competition and boost attendances, because many mid-table teams had nothing to aim for, and it did improve those leagues. However for the Premier League I don't think it's necessary. With a top 4 team usually winning the League Cup and/or FA Cup it means that teams have a realistic chance of qualifying for Europe if they finish as low as 7th. This in itself is enough incentive for mid-table teams to do well until the end of the season.
For once I have to agree with Benitez - imagine having to play more games at the end of the season to qualify??? Especially in a World Cup year. What if in 4 years time United finish 4th and have to go in these playoffs and Rooney gets injured just before the World Cup?Comment

the champions league is what it says ... "a league".. the europa cup is now similar. how long will it be before the winner of the europa cup is allowed to play in the cl???
surely this is why the premiership was formed, to get rid of "smaller" clubs!! but winning "IT", is not now so important is it? can you really have a team that finished 7th, winning the cl?? no way!!!YNWA..Comment
