    Offensive or not

Strange, I knew it would be a Scottish company!

Quote: Company warned over football T-shirt

A Scottish clothing company has been warned by police over t-shirts expressing the hope that 'Anyone but England' wins this summer's World Cup.

Police have warned proprietors of the Slanj clothing store in Aberdeen that the garment could cause offence.

An impromptu visit from an officer raising concerns over the shirt's sentiments left staff at the shop "flabbergasted".

The visit was not in response to a complaint, and no action has been taken against the company.

However, Grampian Police claim that they would be neglecting their duty if the matter was not addressed.

PC Kirk Hemmings said: "The primary role of any police force is to preserve the peace and we would be failing in our duty if we did not make people aware of the potential for disturbance such a window display could cause.

"The Grampian area, in common with the rest of the country, has recorded incidents relating to nationality and we have a responsibility to do our best to ensure that incidents of this nature are kept to a minimum.

Ross Lyle of Slanj said: "To be honest we're absolutely flabbergasted.

"We have been selling this T-shirt for the past three months and we've had a great response. Even the English people who come into the store think it's a laugh and just a bit of tongue-in-cheek football banter.

"We're certainly not being racist. We are the same race as the English. It's just daft to say it's offensive."

The slogan is believed to have originated from the phrase 'ABU', short for 'Anyone but United', referring to football fans who will support any team that is playing Premier League champions Manchester United.

The t-shirt is described on Slanj's website as "A light hearted dig at our English neighbours and their prospects in the forthcoming World Cup, not that we're bitter or anything, just because we didnae qualify!"

Is there anything wrong with this?

Cmon how many people go to old firm/derby matches and loath the other team. When it comes to the world cup anyone from close countries would not want the opposition winning

This is more politics gone down the shithole.

Its about time the goverment actually done something about the things that matter in Great britain instead of focusing on mediocre things like this which at the end of the day is just tounge and cheek.

And as for it being only us scots i used to get called all sorts of names from the southerners in the army (joking amongst friends)

This is just something to stick in the papers etc to swerve from putting in what people actually care about.

Just a shame someone like yourself finds this offensive.

Goes to show what the countrys coming to when people like yourself take to caring about little things like this.

    Rant OVER. Thank you

Im English & fan of British National teams. We are British arent we? Personally, if we werent there (England) and Scotland were, Id support them, as I would Wales, NI, and ROI (although not British).
I for one think that T shirt is the brainchild of a plonker. I'd be delighted if any British team won the World cup.

Why start by saying "Strange, I knew it would be a Scottish company!"

Alarm bells sterted ringing as soon as i read that.

Why you say that? Is that not a racial/bias comment?

I can only think that you are digging a hole for yourself. So admit it you wouldnt support any other team and you would only support your team in the world cup. As would I.

No-one in there right mind would support another enemy when it comes to football.

I have to admit if it was an English firm with a slogan like "any team but Scotland" It would probably be disliked bye a few scottish or maybe just laughed at.

but there is a lot of prejudice in sports. and there are a lot made over whether someone is British or English or Scottish, welsh etc.
As a general rule if someone any of the countries that make up Britain wins something, then they are playing for britain.

If they lose or have done something wrong then they suddenly become Scottish, Irish, welsh etc but not British

It's just the way the press like to report things and they take great pleasure in pointing out stuff like higgies post to try and stirr things up.

One day we will all live in a world where all races, religions and sports fans can live in harmony................
          or maybe not

These types of posts always get a reaction but quite often the threads end up going down the wrong route or inviting members to stir things up. Then they end up getting closed

You obviously arent a true english football fan. I know lots of lads on here who are english and would love to see Scotland get gubbed.

If you were a true fan then you would not have brought this up as this is as stated tounge in cheek and mediocre.

As if you (England) had made a similar top we wouldnt moan about it we would ony chant about it.

We would take it in the chin. Suppose thats what seperates the men from the boys.

Scottish fans are welcomed anywhere in the world as we are lovers not haters.

Aw well it was good while it lasted.

                      THE TRUTH
                      The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.
