The cleverest man in the world, Stephen Fry, said on QI that the croatian word for croatia is "cravat" and that a bunch of croation mercenaries in like 1500 had a cravat as part of their uniform. some french king (louis the something) saw this cravat and thought it was cool, so he and a load of others started wearing them, the fashion took hold in the rest of the civilised world and now we all wear them. so croatia is tieland!
