    England 4 West Germany 2

(World Cup final: Wembley, July 30, 1966)

NO ONE needs reminding of this famous afternoon.

A packed Wembley feared the worst when Helmut Haller gave West Germany an early lead but Hurst bagged his first to level. Martin Peters looked to have won it for England - only for Wolfgang Weber to grab a last-gasp equaliser and force extra time.
However Hurst, preferred by Sir Alf Ramsay to Jimmy Greaves, put England back in front, thanks to a Russian linesman. And to make certain he raced clear and ignored fans streaming on to the pitch to blast the fourth.
Full-back George Cohen said: "You could cut the atmosphere with a knife. As you got closer to the pitch I heard this buzzing like a bee. The buzzing became a roar. When I got to the pitch all I could see was movement and colour."
ENGLAND: Banks, Cohen, Wilson, Moore, J Charlton, B Charlton, Stiles, Ball, Hunt, Hurst, Peters.
    Goals: Hurst 18, 101, 120, Peters 78.
WEST GERMANY: Tilkowski, Hoettges, Schnellinger, Beckenbauer, Schultz, Weber, Haller, Seeler, Held, Emmerich Overath.
    Goals: Haller 12, Weber 90.

    England 2 West Germany 3

    (World Cup quarter-final: Mexico, June 14, 1970)

GOING out in the quarter-finals was to become painfully familiar for England fans.
It all began brightly as Alan Mullery and Martin Peters put England firmly in charge.
But Peter Bonetti - replacing Gordon Banks who had been struck down with food poisoning - allowed a Franz Beckenbauer shot to squirm past him and then Uwe Seeler levelled and took it to extra time.
Gerd Muller grabbed the winner to complete the West Germans' fightback while Ramsey's decision to sub Bobby Charlton on his last England appearance was heavily critisised.
Charlton: "I've never thought that was as decisive as people say. For me the decisive thing was Gordon Banks not playing."
Bonetti: "I still haven't been allowed to forget it 40 years on."
ENGLAND: Bonetti, Newton, Cooper, Mullery, Labone, Moore, Lee, Ball, B Charlton, Hurst, Peters.
    Goals: Mullery 31, Peters 49.
GERMANY: Maier, Hoettges, Schnellinger, Beckenbauer, Vogts, Seeler, Fichtel, Overath, Muller, Libuda, Loehr.
    Goals: Beckenbauer 68, Seeler 82, Muller 108.

    England 1 West Germany 1

(Germany win 4-3 on pens: World Cup semi-final - Turin, July 4 1990)

SIR BOBBY ROBSON'S England made a poor start to the finals - sounds familiar? - but came so close to winning it.
On a tense night, a deflected Andy Brehme free-kick looped over Peter Shilton to give West Germany the lead.
But Gary Lineker, the tournament's top scorer, equalised 10 minutes from time to take the tie into extra time.
Gazza realised his World Cup dream was over when he picked up a yellow card and millions of people saw him break down in tears.
The teams could not be separated in extra time so it went to penalties and while Germany scored all theirs, Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle failed.
Lineker: "We were on the brink of getting to the final and if we'd got there we'd have been strong favourites. It's the one thing looking back that I've got a tinge of disappointment about."
ENGLAND: Shilton, Parker, Walker, Butcher, Wright, Pearce, Platt, Gascoigne, Waddle, Beardsley, Lineker.
    Goals: Lineker 80.
GERMANY: Illgner, Brehme, Kohler, Augenthaler, Buchwald, Haessler, Berthold, Matthaeus, Thon, Klinsmann, Voller.
    Goals: Brehme 60.

    England 1 Germany 1

(Germany win 6-5 on pens: Euro Championships, semi-finals - Wembley June 26, 1996)

THE whole nation was gripped by Euro 96 and an expectant Wembley firmly believed football was coming home.
When Alan Shearer continued his run by nodding home from close range early on it seemed our 30-year wait for a trophy could be at an end.
But the joy was short-lived as Stefan Kuntz equalised with what turned out to be the last goal of the game.
David Seaman had been the hero against Spain but could not save them this time. Stuart Pearce exorcised his demons by scoring in the shootout and Gareth Southgate was the villain this time as Germany won - again.
Southgate said: "To get that close was so frustrating. Then the nightmare unfolded for me."
ENGLAND: Seaman, Pearce, Adams, Southgate, Ince, Platt, Gascoigne, Anderton, McManaman, Shearer, Sheringham.
    Goals: Shearer 3.
GERMANY: Kopke, Reuter, Freund, Helmer, Sammer, Moller, Scholl, Kuntz, Babbel, Ziege, Eilts.
    Goals: Kuntz

    Germany 1 England 5

(World Cup qualifier: Munich, Sep 1, 2001)

GERMANY had spoiled the farewell to the old Wembley 11 months earlier but what a way to take revenge.
This was undoubtedly the highlight of Sven Goran Eriksson's time in charge of the Three Lions and a humiliating night for Germany.
Carsten Jancker gave the home side an early lead but Michael Owen levelled and Steven Gerrard rifled in a cracker just before the interval.
Owen scored two more after the break to make the points safe but Sven's men were still not finished at that with Emile Heskey bagging a rare goal!
Eriksson said: "I still can't believe we can beat Germany 5-1 away, it seems like a dream. I told them before the game 'if you play football as you can play we can beat any team, even Germany away'."
GERMANY: Kahn, Rehmer, Worns, Nowotny, Linke, Bahme, Hamann, Deisler, Ballack, Jancker, Neuville.
    Goals: Jancker 6.
ENGLAND: Seaman, G Neville, Ferdinand, Campbell, Cole, Beckham, Gerrard, Scholes, Barmby, Owen, Heskey.
    Goals: Owen 12, 47, 66; Gerrard 45; Heskey 73.
