Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand could be arrested and held in police cells after a warrant was issued for a court-case no-show.
The younger brother of England captain Rio Ferdinand was expected at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Monday after he was caught driving while using a mobile phone.
But the former West Ham player - who already had nine points on his licence and was set for a driving ban - never showed and Northumbria Police issued a warrant for his arrest.
If he is traced before handing himself in there is a good chance he could be held in police custody until his magistrates appearance.
"There has been no arrest at this stage," a Northumbria Police spokesman said. "A warrant has been issued and we are aware."
On July 13 Ferdinand was seen driving his white Range Rover while using his phone on Newcastle's Central Motorway, en route to the airport ahead of a pre-season friendly.
