Rangers have confirmed that Ally McCoist will succeed Walter Smith as the club's manager next season, a widely-expected move.

The former Rangers and Scotland striker has been working as Smith's assistant since 2007 and "was always being groomed" as his successor, chief executive Martin Bain said.

"We are delighted to confirm Ally as our next manager when Walter Smith steps down at the end of the season," Bain added on the club website.

"First and foremost Ally is a passionate Rangers supporter who has been a loyal servant to the club both as a player and more recently assistant manager.

"He has contributed greatly to our success over the past four years and that is why we feel he is the right man to replace Walter.

"He is the unanimous choice of the Rangers board and when I offered him the position in December - during our Champions League trop to Bursaspor - he agreed immediately."

The Smith-McCoist management team has overseen a successful period for Rangers, during which they won six trophies and reached the UEFA Cup final, where they were beaten by Zenit St Petersburg.

This season has been more difficult though as a combination of financial troubles and a reinvigorated Celtic have seen them crash out of the Champions League and fall eight points behind the Hoops in the SPL.

Was always going to be the case. He was training up the minute he joined the club.

as a rangers fan i wish ally all the best as manager- i beleive he will bring out the best in our mediocre players as he will be able to bring some passion and grit into their play. Much the same as lennon has done for celtic.
