Yes.

If the phone won't give you the option to use your music as a ringtone, visit google play & download extended rings (I think)

Almost right, it's called Rings Extended.

Once installed it will allow you to use Mp3's stored on your phone as ringtones.

You might need to move the sound files to the notification folder before they can be used for messages.
