Try this but it will wipe the phone of all your contacts etc etc --
1.Switch on the cell phone.
2.Make sure, that you are in Home screen, then tap Apps -> Settings -> Privacy -> Factory data reset -> Reset phone -> Erase everything.
3.Accept your choice.
4.Wait few seconds, your phone will reboot.
5.That's all.

Then you need the "diagram" that was set as the lock screen by the person that owned it otherwise I can see no way to progress to be able to achieve what you want. The "diagram" is the same as a lock code, without it the phone will not do anything unless you can take it to a repair shop and get them to factory restore it for you.
