    Archos 7HT 8GB

I see the Archos 7HT 8GB is only ?99 in Tesco, which looks a great little buy.

Has anyone got / used one..? My wife is after an eReader for her birthday.

I'm torn between the 7HT and the ?89 Kindle.

I think for the extra ?10 the functions the Archos has will make it a better investment. My wife isn't a proper geek, so long as she can check her emails, read bbc.co.uk and read eBooks she'll be happy with a budget tablet

    Any opinions..??

i looked at it for shady jr, ended up going with the archos 101.., as it does more of what he'll / i'll use it for..

when i was looking the 7ht looked a good little tablet, but it was ?129.99 when i was looking and i got the 101 for ?149, but for ?99, get it

Can't actually find anything concrete to state whether it has a resistive touchscreen or not but I think it has. Don't get a resistive touchscreen, get a capacitive one.

it has got resistive.. also no flash
but for what you say its going to be used for then flash doesnt seem to be a big problem.
i would agree with mj that capacative IS better than resisitive, but have had a play with the archos and touchscreen is good, beeter than a ds for instance.
and looking at it as an alternative to a kindle, then its a good price

We looked at a few different tablets the saw that on the Amazon warehouse clearance they have a refurbished Kindle Keyboard (wifi but not 3g) for ?79 these actually brand new and have a full 12 month warranty. They have 4gb memory (the new kindle only has 2gb) and the battery life is twice that of the new kindle.

You don't get a mains charger but they charge from USB anyway.

We also got an aluminium clamshell case for the kindle which can be used as a stand, it was ?12.49 (18$AUS) from ebay, from Hong Kong, there's only 1 person selling them.

I've also got an Archos 101 and I would much rather read from an E-Ink display that an LCD.

It always was a bit of a piss take calling the DS a touchscreen

For years I have used a Nokia N810 for Ebooks and have recently gone over to an Commtiva N700 Android (old eyes, small screen) and am pleased with it for reading.

Second hand they are about ?90 on eBay.

she currently has plenty of eBooks on her lappy so reading from a tablet shouldn't bother her too much..

i did read about being able to hack a kindle and there being firmware with browsers etc on.. is this utter pish or is there any truth in it..??

One way may be to take her to Tesco and let her have a play with all the tablets.. but that takes the surprise out of it

You can't watch video on the kindle at all, the screen is too slow but you can browse the Internet in general on it. If you get a 3G one you can browse for free wherever you are. I am not sure about the new cheap Kindle though, it may not have a browser or MP3 player at all.
