External hard drive

Hi.
I have been told that I can link an external hard drive to my m8 box. Is this true? And if so can are there any particular specifications it would need. It would be to build up a movie library. Thanks in advance.

i've tried several external hdd's on mine and on my other android quad box and everyone has worked,
i can download and play media from all, with no problems.
