Avi-xvid converter

Hi could peeps please help my find the best free converter to convert my xvid/avi library to a format I can drag and drop onto my new IPAD 2s

I've converted a avi sample with format factory to a mp4 file and used the correct FFS rate and all the other setting to make sure the output file is in the scope of what is compatible but when I try to drag it over to iTunes I get a message telling me the "film.mp4 was not copied to the iPad because it cannot be played on this iPad" any help ?

I done it now. All that was stopping me was that I hadn't installed QuickTime player. After I had I could drag and drop the files over to the iPod in iTunes.
